Rushing To Do What?

SUV pic
Not the actual offender, but a close approximation!

Have you ever wondered where the nut that almost hit your car after speeding in and out of interstate lanes is rushing to?  Surely, he or she needs to get someplace in short order-right?  I mean, maybe this person has received an extremely distressing telephone call.  Maybe he or she is a physician on the way to an emergency.  Maybe this person is trying to seek medical attention for himself or a family member.  Or maybe….NOT!

This weekend, I had the opportunity to get an up-close answer to these questions.  Do you wanna read about it? I am sure that you are now on the edge of your seat!  I’ll try not to disappoint— so here we go!

This past Saturday, while driving on a busy thoroughfare, I noticed a huge black tank of an SUV speeding up behind me.  This behemoth was moving so fast that I thought it was going to slam right into me.  Fortunately, the driver didn’t hit me, but he did tailgate me for a while before swerving left into the passing lane.  Needless to say, the motorist at the helm of that intimidating monstrosity continued barreling down the highway- darting in and out of traffic with very little room between cars to spare.  I thought to myself, surely something urgent must have happened.  Little did I know, I was about to witness the end result of all of this hurried insanity.

After traveling another mile or so, I exited the interstate in order to stop by my favorite bookstore to grab a cup of coffee and to look for a new book.  As I was parking, I noticed that the same black SUV that had nearly hit me on the interstate was parked in a nearby parking lot!  How do I know that it was the same truck?  Because this truck had several distinct decals, stickers of stick people, stick dogs, stick cats, memorial notices and ornate monograms plastered on the back window.  If you had seen it, I promise that you would have remembered it too.  Anyway, since I could see the driver’s shadow as he or she sat in the truck, I decided to wait a few minutes to spy.  Before too long, a very slender lady dressed in workout gear emerged from the truck and walked toward the bookstore where I had planned to go.  I ramped up my game of espionage by quietly following her.  After entering the store, I watched closely as she ordered a cup of coffee–savored it, browsed through a few magazines and lingered near a bookshelf.  My dearest friends, I can assure you that there was NOTHING hurried about this woman’s actions.  In fact, she looked quite relaxed.

Which brings me to this question, what was her rush? Why was she trying to mow down every car on the interstate?  I am asking you these questions because I got nothing!

After this little mini-drama ended, I decided to make a concerted effort to question myself whenever I start to rush.  I vow to ask myself questions like:  Why are you rushing?  Are you late for something?  Even if you are late, what is the worst that can happen?  By doing this, I hope to avoid creating a sense of urgency where there is none.  Sadly, it appears that the lady in the bookstore was rushing to relax; which seems sort of contradictory.  Don’t you think?

What are you rushing to do?

  1. TOTALLY AGREED! Driving on the road with those non-friendly drivers are S-C-A-R-Y. They truly have no regards for other cars who are not trying to bum-rush their way through traffic. Where I live, most of the drivers on your bumper are the ones with the big 4×4 trucks it really boils me. Sometimes when I drive I just want to coast, drive the speed limit or a little more and sing-a-long to my Mary J.

  2. People that tailgate people are the worst. It makes no sense. As if you riding the rear of my car is going to make me speed up. I wrote about the same thing a while back.

Let me know what you think. Hopefully someone will hear us.

    1. I know right?
Tailgating me only makes me slooooooow down! It definitely does not make me speed up. LOL!!
Thanks for stopping by and checking me out. I actually wrote this post back in January or February and I decided to reblog it 🙂
I will certainly check out your post love 🙂

  3. Wow, Lady G! There is another underlying issue here. Too many people focusing on their needs & forgetting there are other individuals in the world. We have become so narcissistic that we think it is absolutely ok to run someone off the road because we are jonesing for a pumpkin spice latte. When I was in corporate America it seemed I was rushing all the time. All it did was stress me out. Now, I choose to go at my own pace. It is safer….good post!

      1. Lady G- I really had to restrain myself from posting what I really thought of that woman who was driving like her pants were on fire. Just think of a quote from Anchorman Ron Burgundy to Veronica Corningstone having to do with punching her somewhere……. 🙂

  4. Lol great piece! I was honestly on the edge of my seat, lol.

I swear people do not know how to drive anymore. Driving manuals tell people that there is supposed to be a one car distance for every 10 miles per hour we are going in speed. But people NEVER take that seriously. They figure they can just ride someone’s bumper the whole way … as if that makes ANY sense! What I typically do in that situation depends almost entirely on my mood and whether or not I am alone. If I am in a good mood and/or with someone, I will just move over to the right land so they can pass. But if I am in a bad mood/and or alone, I will be petty and do things to anger the driver behind me. I do not recommend these things, Lady G lol, I just do them because I short circuit every now and again. I do stuff like turn slow down, turn on my hazards, and then spray some windshield wiper fluid – so that it flies onto THEIR windshield lol. They almost ALWAYS get frustrated and end up switching lanes themselves.

People need to take it more slow on the road, as they are already exceedingly bad drivers!

    1. Greetings Bro. Darryl!
I am coming to you live and direct from the recovery room of the Cardiac surgery unit!
      SMH!!!!
I guess it is what it is but that doesn’t stop me from being pissed!
Anyway, I laughed hard when I imagined you spraying speeding tailgaters with water and wiper fluids! LOL!!
My old standby is to slow waaaay the hell down-but, like you, I tend to do that when I’m alone 🙂

        1. Oh lmao. Whenever I get an “okaayy” from a woman it reminds me of when, in high school, I would compliment a girl I liked and instead of accepting it she would be like “okayyyyyyy….” and walk away slowly lmaoo. Ill flashback!

Lol that Florida Evans scene is so epic and can be applied to damn near any tragedy lol

        2. LOL!!! That is too funny! I have see those neck shaking, tongue wagging ‘okaaaays’
          This was NOT that! LOL!!!!

Yes! That scene is, indeed, epic and, as you said, it is appropriate for any tragedy! LOL!!!

Very perceptive post Gwin. Good for you for the detective work. And no one can’t argue with the logic can they? (Well they probably would but the quality would be in the ‘Ugh me fast’ or ‘Well, like y’know. I mean y’know’ qualities)
A lot of these folk do like to prove how cool, important or macho they are by swerving and swinging out of traffic, like they were in a blockbuster film.
We get twits doing this in our dinky little two-lane roads. (ie one lane for the cars coming one way and one lane for the cars going the other way)
What I like in when of one of these speed-freaks tears past me, narrowly missing another car, speeds off into to the distance, only to have me come put-putting along and pull up right close behind then, ’cause they’ve had to wait at a junction, traffic lights or traffic snarl up. I don’t know if they see my especially infuriating smile directed right at them.

    1. LOL!! Sorry for the late response. I laughed all the way through this! I often say that traffic lights are “the great equalizer.”
Just like you, I love giving a snide little smile to the jackass that just sped and weaved through traffic only to find himself sitting at the light with me.
Not a whole lot gained from all that madness 🙂

An’t it fun to get the best of them 😄.
Back in the 1970s our family car was a large clunky Ford Cortina, she was slow but would go up the side of a wall if you asked her.
One day this lad in his flash open top speedster shot past me (naturally on a dangerous part of the road)…no doubt to impress the girl at his side.
I knew this bit of road, a mile down it you can to this long hill which was kind of vertical. Annndd there was his dinky little speedster built for the straight struggling, I dropped down into low gear and slowly passed him….managing a gallant smile at the young lady passenger 😄
        (Ahh youth)

  6. There’s a song by Alabama which pretty neatly sums this up
“I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.

    Don’t know why
I have to drive so fast
My car has nothing to prove
    It’s not new
    But it’ll do 0 to 60 in 5.2”

Plus, some people get a kick out of driving this fast in traffic. Maybe there are some who look for stimulation through kicks such as this which to compensate for something amiss in their lives.

    1. Love the lyrics! I always enjoy incorporating music into my posts 🙂
BTW, I think you’re on to something in reference to people getting their kicks by driving fast in traffic.
Frankly, that sounds like the only valid explanation for what this woman was doing.

  7. Going to work on a Canadian highway, I watched a sedan do much the same. Cutting in and out, it passed me like I was standing still, and cut another driver off. I noticed a Michigan plate on the back, and wondered aloud if he drove like that at home. Where’s a cop when you need one?? Oh, there, under the overpass, where I’ve never seen one before. Keep Ontario green. Leave money. 😳

Rushing to work, rushing to get where ever I’m going . Seems that it takes longer to get there so I figured if I drive faster I will get there quicker!!! Until this certain day I was clocked and pulled over by an unmarked state trooper received my first ticket for speeding at the age of 50. Now I have learned better, drive slower and watch others as they fly by and like you wonder where they are going in such a hurry!

    1. Hi TrisGigi! Your response here is hilarious! Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I’m sorry to hear about the trooper who ruined your clean driving record. However, I’m happy to hear that you’ve started to question the need to hurry! Do come back to my blog. In fact, why don’t you hit follow and you’ll get an email whenever I post something new. Take care!

    Yet another great post! 🙂

I agree entirely. I, for one, tend to sit back and enjoy life. What’s the point in rushing things? Might as well sit back and smell the roses, especially when you’re already late to something…LoL
