3. Hey Girlfriend – So sorry, I’m damn late for this party. Had to do some girl stuff with my daughters today – they’re both on vacation.
   It’s been great reading everybody’s comments and laughing along the way. ( the Gerri curls?) In my neighbourhood everyone was still in Afro mode – don’t think the Gerri curl landed on our shores ha!ha!)
   So I guess you were a real hot chick with those shorts and the mohawk and the cruising in that car. What fun it is to relive those times. If you had a choice which age would you like to freeze. I used to always think it would be 18 for me, but looking back I realize that as much as I was starting to come out of my shell, I was also still mixed up back then. Maybe 32 or thereabouts was young enough and old enough if you get my drift.

   So to your jams, the ones that I recognise are the Ojays and I’m with Ron on Freddy Jackson. I’m afraid I might have been in another zone in 85. I know Michael Jackson and Kool and the Gang were still hot at parties but I guess I had by this time established my brand loyalty to certain artists carried over from the 70s. So Teddy, Luther, Manhattans, Stylistics,Roberta Flack, Randy Crawford – would have been on my list – whatever their latest albums were.

   I was studying again so that I could change my profession and by this time my serious relationship had become a along distance one. So during those days relationships depended on letter writing and telephone booths. Looking back I got to appreciate that a guy who would hitch a ride travelling 600 kms (not sure what this is in miles) to see his girl.

   But, there was a “but” and so two songs that stood out for me that year were “Go now” by the Stylistics and Break up to make up by the Stylistics. In the last quarter of that year though, a wedding was being planned and this girl was planning to move 600 kms from home. I guess 85/86 were those crossroad years. When I try to think about how my life would have turned out if I hadn’t chosen the road I did, I know I made the right choice.

   So yeah Girl, while you were in the prime of adolescence, I went through some bittersweet times and making some big decisions that would determine my fate. Btw, my brother-in-law to be was listening to New Edition – had a whole collection and when he gave up his music for the church, he gave all his New Editions to me.

   I’ve got to agree with everyone in the compliments they’ve given you Girl – you deserve all the accolades for putting these jams together and gathering us around the fire again.💞💞💞

      I had to take a sick doggie to the vet so I have been back and forth a lot today.
      Chevvy, i’ve seen a picture of you and honey you would have had absolutely no need for a Jheri curl ! LOL! That’s why those things didn’t make it to your neck of the woods. Hell truth be told, we didn’t NEED them either but we were under the whole ‘good hair’ delusion; even I joke about it when talking about my Dad.
      You asked a very interesting question. I think that my ideal age was around the same as yours, maybe a little bit older. I think about that whenever I imagine how I’d look like in the Heavenly realm 🙂
      Girl, I really can’t blame you about sticking with the old school because when I went back in time to listen to some of the songs what were out back in the 1980’s, as I said in the post, it began to work my nerves. So good on you! You knew when to bail the hell out!
      You know, I do remember those love letters in the mail. I would stalk the postman looking for letters from my beau. At one point he was as far away as your sweetie.
      As they say, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Those really were some good times.
      Chevvy, I treasure you and I am so glad to have you ‘around.’ Thank you so much for going through time with me.

      1. Hey Gwin – good to see you. Hope your doggie is doing better.
         I smile when you speak of the “good hair delusion” I don’t think we’ve moved away from that – probably just hadn’t heard the words: “Jheri curl” The business of hair is big business and with two daughters I should know😀 Back in the day, guys wouldn’t do much with their hair except wear afros or get a Number 1 haircut at the Barber shop. These days men do all kinds of things to pamper themselves. We bump into hem in the Spas doing the whole deal from head to toe.

         On your jam list – I just hadn’t heard those songs and I’ll spend time listening to those that were your particular favorites. We had a new radio station open in 1986 and I was introduced to a greater selection of Quiet Storm type music and smooth Jazz. Fortunately the Regina’s, Gladys Knights, Maysa and others continued to produce music into the 90s and 200s so I guess I got comfortable with what I liked.

         Glad to know that you shared the letter experience. You know our national post office has been in a shambles for a long time now so thank goodness we don’t have to depend on letters anymore. But that was an age of a different kind of romance, I loved the anticipation of waiting for each letter. Our children, growing up in an instant gratification world can’t appreciate that. I’m not complaining though because instant gratification has its merits, don’t have to wait two or three weeks to get a response from you.
         Yes, I agree that those were good times but I hope one day we’ll look back at these years as part of our good times. I know that every season has its highlights.
         I know that you’ve gone through some tough times but cheers to those turning the corner.
         Now, I can’t keep my eyes open anymore and it’s darn cold here at night so I’m saying goodnight. As I leave,you’re a treasure find for me too.Enjoy your evening sweetheart!💞💞

         2. Good morning/afternoon Chevvy,

            Speaking a bit more about the whole Jheri curl thing, by the time 1985 had rolled around my contemporaries where over it; unless they were a lot older. Now in California, that curl thing went all the way into the 1990’s. Oh no! If you look at pictures of rapper Ice Cube from the early 1990’s it looks like he was still rocking a curl. It was acceptable there but even in country Georgia, the fellas had moved on to neat looking fades. I am wondering if that is what you are referring to when you say a number 1 haircut.
            BTW, thanks for asking about the Doggie, I think she’s doing better; the good news is that the Vet didn’t find anything major. The bad news is that they made a huge billing error so I have to go there this morning to get that corrected. I am sending love and light ahead of me because I want everything to be resolved properly and with ease.
            Anyway, as you go back and introduce yourself to the songs that I listed here, I would love to hear your thoughts about them. I really do think that you will like “Shadow Love” by the Mary Jane girls so please do look into that one. Don’t forget to let me know what you think.
            As for the mailbox, you are right about those letters; it was neat to have that element of anticipation. But as you said, we live in a world of instant gratification that is good but it also makes folks feel that EVERYTHING should happen instantly. You know, the whole “I want it right now thing.”
            Awww, thanks for acknowledging both the good times and the rough times. Yes, I had some tough times but as you mentioned, I turned a corner. I am sure that we all can swap those sad stories but I rather keep things light-hearted in the posts.

            Life does have a way of continuing to happen huh? But that’s a good thing 🙂

         3. My dear Gwin, I’m up early so I thought I’d use this time to catch up while everyone is still asleep. Had a busy Saturday more to do with errands than having fun though it’s all been good.

            You may likely be sleeping but that’s fine – catch up when you can. On the Jheri curl thing, I’ve just checked out pictures (google) and I think some of the youngsters sport some of those these days. In our black community, weaves and all that goes with it is quite the thing. There is some talk of people going natural. Not sure how long that way of thinking will last. Just took both my daughters for a brazilian (don’t know if you call it the same thing your end) While I don’t refute the going natural concept, My girls have too much hair on their heads and we’ve been through the tangles episodes. So right now they are both looking beautiful with much more manageable hair.

            Yeah the Number 1 is the shortest haircut you can go – almost close to shaving it all off. Shaved heads are very fashionable among men. I see T does that – just wonder how much work is involved there.
            As for me, I had quite a haircut myself, still getting used to it. It’s part of the “new me” if you like.
            My cousin(we’re more friends than cousins) sent me a message yesterday (Saturday) to read a magazine she had been reading while at a hair salon. Said that page 33 was written just for me. Well, so it was – absolutely. In essence it spoke to all changes I’m trying to effect in my life at the moment and I’ve decided to use it as my bible over the coming months.

            Don’t know if you are into numerology at all – I like reading up on all these alternative things and in accordance with my destiny number, I’m at the beginning of a new cycle. When I trace the twists and turns in my life, this pattern of cycles has held true for me almost precisely.
            So I expect to be busy over the next couple of weeks re-directing my life on a number of fronts. Btw you have been throwing some suggestions my way that I want to explore. It does mean that I’ll have to reprioritise in terms of the blog for a while though I’d still like to keep up as much as I can.
            Haven’t had time to listen to the music yet but, I’ll get back to you when I have. Glad to hear that your doggie is fine – what’s his /her name?

            Hey girl! Not sure if you knew or remembered that we have the 4th of July holiday coming up Monday. I won’t be doing much with that. I’ll cook a little bit but nothing grand like some folks will. It’s kinda funny because as black folks, this was not our independence so I don’t really know what the hell we are celebrating. But that said, I feel very lucky to live in America. So I consider myself to be blessed in that way.
            One thing that I will be doing- for sho- is watching the Twilight Zone rerun marathon that the Syfy channel runs on the 4th. All TZ fans will be in full effect!
            Girl, I understand the hassle of dealing with a lot of hair! My daughter has a head full and there is no way in hell that I can imagine having to deal with two heads–Chile, one is killing me so I do get the whole Brazillian thing.
            Now, I would love to see your new haircut! I’ll bet it is the bomb! I would also love to know what is on page 33!
            As for numerology, I do find that interesting. I know that this is not related but I love looking for triple repeating numbers-those are supposed to be messages from the angels. I often get the one about positive transitions and the one that tells you that the angels are surrounding you.
            As for your pursuits, I pray that they involve you looking into a bit of professional photography because you already know what I think; if you aren’t already doing that, you should be!

         5. Yes,I did remember but I’ve not been sure how you celebrate it for precisely your point. We have Freedom day on the 27th April which is in celebration of our democracy but I don’t think we’re all mobilised around it because I guess there’s still some housecleaning around what democracy means.
            Enjoy the day and It’s great for you to say that you’re a proud American. Whatever our worries may be, I am a proud South African. Years ago, I read Gone with the Wind and Alex Hayley’s “Roots”. We’re actually following a remake series of Roots these past few weeks. So I understand why the ambivalence but also what it means to be where you are now.

            Enjoy the TZ fest/feast. It’s been a while since I did some Binge watching.

            Oh it’s been a very long time since I had such short hair so I’m still getting used to it. When I feel more confident, I might put a picture up. It’s part of all the change I’m into right now.
            I guess Page 33 is about redefining redefining myself. The title of the article is “Are you doing what YOU want?” A lot of it is about what I’ve spoken about with my cousin and when she read it,she saw my name in Blue lights. But the whole focus of this issue is about starting a new path. One of the suggestions it makes is to declutter on all levels – energy drainers on a physical,financial,health and relationship level. Since I stopped formal employment I haven’t given enough focus to this and it can be a blockage to building something new.
            There are some nice examples of what they call solopreneurs. So your suggestion of me doing something with my photographs is the kind of thing they talk about. Anyway, I need some thinking time to get my act together in the next few weeks so if you don’t see me around a little,know that I’m working on my plan and giving it effect. Geez I better stop right there.
            I’ve seen your Pomeranian – Angel is a cutepie. We must think about becoming penpals at some point since the whole world must be laughing at us. Amazing how we can feel when we are strangers still in many ways – that soul thang girl!. Sweetheart, if you don’t see me around, we’ll meet up at the campfire. Lots of love from me to to you.       Thanks for being such a good sport about it! LOL!
      Just so you know, this series is solely about Soul and R&B because I wanted to ‘preserve’ some of that heritage but it does not include all of my favorites.
      You’d probably be surprised to know that one of my favorite songs on Earth is ‘Something’ by The Beatles! That said, I am a die-hard George Harrison fan. Something about the ‘quiet Beatle’ that resonates with me.

         Here’s a tale (or three) about music.
         Back in my snotty teenage days, I was a Velvet Underground follower…So there I was listening to ‘All Tomorrows’ Parties’, and my dad sticks his head around the door, and said ‘This is good’.
         Surprised I said ‘Dad. This is The Velvet Underground,’
         He shrugged and replied ‘Doesn’t matter. Good music is good music,’..I’ve always kept that close and don’t get put off by ‘genres’.
         Now it’s funny you should mention George Harrison, my dear lady wife was a Beatles’ fan, and the only one she still retains respect for is George (she still has the All Things Must Pass box set….mind you we don’t have a vinyl player…oh well)
         I was never a big follower of R&B and Soul. Just never got around to it, I suppose, although songs would always seep through my noodle-head… ahhh music, a great unifier.
         Back in my teen school days (1964-67), there were boys who bought nothing unless it came out of Tamla-Motown, Stax or Atlantic (Iron Butterfly- didn’t count- I was told)…Cool days.

         1. That is coo!l Your dad was right– good music is good music. The Beatles and a lot of the bands out of the UK– like your friends– always followed Soul and R&B in the US so there was a mutual respect between these groups.

            Now to the wife /George Harrison thing, as I said before your wife really does sound like someone I would love to hang out with– but she has to be because I always enjoy chatting with you so much. I understand why she keeps that box set— who gives a damn if she can’t really play it. LOL!!!

            Whenever I tell people that I am a Beatles, Police, Chicago…etc. fan they look at me strange and ask, “How do you know them?” or “Why are you listening to that?”

            I get that reaction from a lot of white folks here. One time I was someplace and my ringtone rang— it was the famous Harrison guitar intro from “Something” and this white guy asked, “Was that your phone?” and “How do you know that song?” I was like what do you mean? Blacks folks will often ask something similar.

            Anyway, despite those examples, you are absolutely right– music is the great unifier

         2. Yeah people do like to pigeon-hole other people. I don’t think it’s ‘allowed’ to like Enya and Thrash metal f’instance, too bad they’re on my ‘Writer’s’ laptop playlist.
            There’s one of YouTube, from a 1970 Dutch TV programme. Melaine and the Edwin Hawkins(?) Singers, belting out a blistering ‘Lay Down (Candles In The Wind). The audience are mostly very staid looking middle-aged dutch folk-back then had a reputation of being very staid. By the end of the song, everyone is clapping hands in rhythm and ‘the joint is really rockin”- !!!!.
            I’ll pass that message onto my wife. Her favourite topics are The Grandchildren, Christianity, Poetry, Soccer, Crosswords and being rude about British governing politicians, in that order (well usually).

6. What a wonderful lead in that to me was like an exciting amusement park ride. You snared some major ’85 good things in this one. Your visiting the cars of the year is awesome!. And the IROC Z was one of the sexiest, fastest, and wished for cars in ’85. You’re not going to believe this but remember the girlfriend “Mollie” I mentioned (I think in MJ 84) – she drove one. And then you bring in Nissan’s Z cars – oh you are on a roll in this one tying it all up with a visit to the Hymn book. Lady G you wrecked shop with this one and I loved it from beginning to your three sign off emoticons.

   Then before I can gather my bladder from that surreal nostalgic entry trip into this post you provided – you toss me right into all this wonderful music that helped shaped and mold the year 1985. Good Lawd!

   I’m elated that RJ’s Latest arrival made your cut. Considered a band of the “Flash, crash, and burn nature – their chart climbing hits are all my favorites and a solid part of 80’s musical history. I had the opportunity to see them perform live (they opened for the Barkays) and I was sold baby- real talk.

   Here’s the thing Gwin, you have the uncanny blessing of perfectly fusing stories with music that played a huge part in defining moments of those stories.

   My Jams ’85 is a stellar example of that rare talent you’ve been bestowed. Only a master writer can throw a hymn in the midst of R&B and make it work. Baby you are good!

   To avoid the risk of being redundant, repetitive, and boring, I’m not going to revisit song for song in your comment space.

   Hell lady, your list can stand by itself with no help from anybody.

   You sealed the deal and validated the authenticity of a real 80’s lady (You) when you dropped Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and Full Force on your list.

   I see your My Jams growing into a bigger cultural platform (I’m serious).

   Keep on Baby My Jams and you are DE Bomb diggity.

      First let me say it sounds like Mollie is becoming my girl! I guess she kicked them house shoes off and jumped in the IROC and rolled the hell out! Gotta love that!
      What a treasure it must have been to see RJ’nem in concert AND the BarKays? You were living all of this stuff. I love hearing stories like that.
      Yes a sister did call forth that old gospel favorite “It’s gonna rain.” It was one of my Godmother’s favorite songs. Couldn’t nobody sing it like them old deacons! LOL! It is my hope that the reader understands that I added that as foreshadowing of things to come. I will probably not address them directly but you will see little nods at the end of each post to acknowledge the rain that happened that year; which you noticed this time.
      By the way, Christopher was my baby brother; he was born prematurely and passed away. That was devastating for my family, as a whole, but for my mother especially.
      I started to use ‘Wade in the Water’ but I thought that’d be toooo much!
      You know G, for me it is very easy to weave stories with songs because I love music so much that all of my memories are associated with a good jam. Like I said before, I was blessed to have landed in my Mama’s lap being that she was the one who introduced me to music.

      G, let me reiterate my thanks to you for always supporting me, the blog and ‘My Jams.’

7. Another excellent post, Twin! You dropped some jams this week that I don’t even remember, and some that you dug way deep in the crates for!

   One nitpick: “Gigolos Get Lonely Too” is by The Time; and it was 1982-83 (or thereabouts). It was on the album with 777-9311. 😉

   The rest of the list is fire. Though I have this one gem I’ll drop into my comments:
   

   1985 found me finishing my first year of college…somewhat wiser about what was expected there, and overall enjoying my first year away from home (mostly). If you asked my mom, she would tell you I was never gone long enough to miss it, since I came home a lot of weekends. It also may (I say may) have been the summer I was talked into getting a Jheri Curl. Hopefully there is no photographic evidence of same. It didn’t last very long…couldn’t stand the messed up pillowcases!

   So glad to see the Mary Jane Girls on this list. “Shadow Lover” was that jam. And a shout out for Full Force-I thought I was the only one who liked them!

   1. Thank you Twin! I love us talking about these jams. As for the nit pick, I know that you are right but according to the Tracy-Gwin Doctrine it passes because I was bumping it in ’85. I shall overlook the fact that it was, as you said, “The Time” and NOT just Morris Day. ROTFLMAO!
      I appreciate you calling these things though in comments because I don’t want to confuse viewers. By the way, when I posted this I made a reference to the Tracy-Gwin Doctrine in the purple writing. I thought you’d get a kick out of that 😉
      Anyway, NOT A JHERI curl Twin? Despite what you say, there MUST be a photo somewhere. God please let there be! LOL.
      So you had trouble staying put on campus—always home hanging out with mom! Now there ain’t NOTHING wrong with that. I say that because people say that my son is a Mama’s boy. I mean there are worse things right?
      Yes Full Force was the business. I’ll be honest, one of my guilty pleasures is ‘Static’ that they did with James Brown–“Don’t start none, won’t be none.”
      And YAAAASSSS wasn’t “Shadow Love” the business?

9. Wonderful lead up story, AGAIN Cuz. How do you do it Cuz, you just keep pulling em out! I also love your list. I was able to pull a couple favorites off of my cheat list from old goldwax317.com, for 1985, but the main thing that I remember was only connected to the music by a hair. 1985 saw a huge increase in the stock of “Gerri-Curl Juice”!l The 1985 list was literally dripping with it.

   Musically though:
   -Alexander O’Neal’s whole album was great
   -Freddie Jackson had a couple on the list that I was particularly fond of. I thought he would be a staple on the charts for a very long time to come…
   -I had a crush on the lead singer of Starpoint; She was the Object of My Desire.

   Oddities:
   -Gerri Curl Juice Everywhere
   -What made Eddie Murphy think he could sing? His song was funnier than his Comedy Album
   -Jesse Johnson?
   -Jermaine Jackson?

   Great Job Cuz….

      You know you had me hollering about them jheri curls. And yes baby, the floors were wet as hell with curl juice.
      Everybody thought Daddy had one! Sike! He’s legit! Don’t hate, appreciate!
      I probably should have clarified that when I said I had a curly mohawk, it was due to hair rollers. I didn’t do the curl thing. I just rolled my shit up every night! LOL!
      I liked all of the legitimate artists (no Eddie) that you mentioned though I did not include them in this post. Like I said, the music was beginning to get on my nerves so I had to do a quick ‘cream of the crop’ –meaning ‘cream of MY crop’ kinda post. You probably noticed that most of the songs that I selected were NOT in the top 10. Hell anybody could tell you what those were. That’s why I shoot for the ones that I loved that many people either missed or forgot about.
      As we move into the years it will be harder to find songs that weren’t played out because we had so much more access to music; especially in the late ’90’s and into the aughts. Of course, this series will NOT go that far.
      I’m glad you liked the lead in. And as always, it was true! Thanks for reading cous! I love you!

   2. Your crush was named Renee Diggs…she and the band were from Maryland. I’ve heard Severna Park and Annapolis…maybe both, but it’s Anne Arundel County for sure. Sadly, she passed away some time back…can’t remember whether she had lupus or MS. Either way, she left here way too soon. She had the voice of an angel.

          2. Cashflow was a one of Larry Blackmon’s protege groups when he first moved Cameo to ATL. If you listen to the whole song you’ll hear him rap! LOL
             He talks about almost being killed on Hwy 85 which he is mostly likely referring to I-85 which runs though ATL.

             Warren Mills was more or less a one hit wonder but I think he was in Beat street or Krush Groove; I can’t remember which.
