My Jams ’94

My Jams 1990s

“My Jams” posts contain adult language and controversial observations.  Song release dates may vary.  Read at your own risk.

Warning:  It’s real funky up in here 🙂

The wind shifts South

Another son is born

He has something to say

And he will NOT be bullshitting

________________________________________________________________

My Girl:  “He fucked up so I had to take it outta his ass!”

Lady G:  “Yeeeeaaaah…but did you have to bust out the ENTIRE windshield to do it?”

My Girl:  “He lucky that’s all I did!”

Lady G:  “But the ENTIRE windshield?”

My Girl:  “Anyway, chile pleeze…I came over here to see the baby!”

Lady G:  (Hands the baby to friend.)

My Girl:  “Look at little fatman!  He sooo cute!  He look just like you and his daddy!”

Lady G:  “Back to the subject at hand…Did he call the police on you?”

My Girl:  “Are you serious?  Chile, he know better than that, hell we just now finished knockin’ boots right before I came over here.”

🙂 🙂 🙂

YAAASSSSS!  Love is complicated as hell!

Y’all my Mama used to warn me ‘bout that “killin’ kinda of love.  You know those relationships where one of the parties says, “If I can’t have you, nobody else will!”

Mama said, if a man ever says that to you, your ass better run like hell!

Anyway, while “my girl” was not in a ‘killin’” kinda relationship, she and her dude did engage in more than a little bit of craziness!

Don’t act like you don’t know folks in relationships like that!  Hell you’re probably in one or you just got out of one yourself!

And so…

How are y’all doing on this magnificent afternoon in 1994?  Is all going well in your world?

As for me?  I’m just chilling with my sweet baby boy!

To be fair, I must apologize in advance.  This list is a bit long.  I was having way too much fun so please forgive me!

My Jams ‘94 (Tha 9Quad)

Switch by TLC

Every once in awhile you just gotta switch shit!

“Erase, replace, embrace, new face.”

YAAASSSSS!

Kick your game by TLC

Dude, I might be willing to spend some time with you…

“…but it depends on how you kick yo’ game.”

“I just wanna know if you can kick some game come with something more clever than just your name…”

Lady G loves listening to a l’il game….if it’s good!

Anytime Anyplace by Janet Jackson

This damn thang was so hot back in the Spring of ‘94

“I don’t wanna stop just because people walkin’ by watching us…”

Janet didn’t give a damn what they thought!

Your Body’s Calling by R.Kelly

Oh he DID that!

Who doesn’t like that jam?

Feenin’ by Jodeci

You got me feenin’ like a straight up junkie!

“You got me feenin’”

Dream on Dreamer by Brand New Heavies

Me and my baby boy danced all over the place to this jam!

Mama was holding that baby tight!

So precious—cannot be replaced!

“Dream on dreamer…”

Happy by Mary J. Blige

“How can I love somebody else

If I can’t love myself enough

To know when it’s time

Time to let go”

What the hell else can I add to that?

My Life LP by Mary J Blige

I blasted this entire album all day every day back in ‘94!

YAAASSSSS!  Hell I can’t even name all of the jams on this one.

Just go back and revisit it baby!  You will be happy you did!

Always and Forever by Luther Vandross

OK, everybody knows that Heatwave (my play cousins) tore this mug up back in ‘76-77.  Well honey Lootha decided to remake it in ‘94!

Did he kill it?

DEAD!

But I’m still partial to the original!  Baby when ‘my cousin’ Johnny rode that damn “you” all the way into falsetto heaven!  “You, YOU, You, You….”

I’M DEAD!

You Send Me Swingin by Mint Condition

“You send me swangin’”

I just can’t with Mint Condition!

Them boys let it be known that they were not messing around!  Not even a little bit!

How Many Ways by Toni Braxton

There go Queen Diva Toni with that sexy Alto!

“Let me count the ways.”

On and On by Janet Jackson

Some people know this as “The Summertime song.”

It samples “Family Affair” by Sly and the Family Stone.

From what I understand, it was never really released as a single; it was a b-side jam.  Don’t quote me, just google the shit for yourself.

Anywhats, we jammed it during the summer of ‘94!

“And the feeling goes on, and on, and on…”

Prayer for the Dying by Seal

My Granddaddy went to be with the Lord in ‘94.

Afterwards, I used to listen to this song and cry my eyes out about it.

Still miss him.

A Kiss From A Rose by Seal

I was telling a fellow blogger that I once read that Seal had a penchant for using old English folk melodies in some of his songs.  Again, Lady G simply cannot be bothered to google it.

Maybe Roger and my UK followers can listen to this jam and tell me if that sounds true.

Roger is it, indeed,  Athurian?  From the days of yore?

YAAAASSSSS!

Part-Time Lover by H-Town

“If you don’t mind, I’ll do you just fine…I will be your part-time lover.”

Dino and them boys DID that!

RIP love.

Can you get wit’ it by Usher

Well I’d like to get wit’ it but you too damn young Urrsha!

Don’t laugh!  Y’all know that’s how country black folks pronounce “Usher”

Anyway, Usher still a cute lil boy tho’!

Anybody here on the urrsha board?

See what I mean?

HA!

Think of You by Usher

“Yes, yes y’all, to da beat y’all!”

Then they went and interpolated or sampled jazz great Ronnie Laws!

Hell if it worked for Black Moon on “Who got da props” then why not try it with Urrsha.

What about Us by Jodeci

JO JO:  I wanna love you, I wanna love you…”

But did Devante Swing throw in a musical nod to Prince?

“Do you lady!”

Yes he did!

“Satisfaction guaranteed if you come and get with me.”

Diary of a Mad Band!

YAAASSSS!

Take a Bow by Madonna

Madonna was showing out in the early and mid ‘90’s!  Check out any of her stuff from back then.  You can’t go wrong.

A bullfighter?  Okaaaay?

Here Comes the Hotstepper

“Act like you know Rico… I know what Bo don’t know!”

Hey Poley?  Where ‘dem hotsteppas at?

Poley is my cousin and she calls her high-heeled shoes “hotsteppas”

YAAASSSSS!

Low Down Dirty Shame Soundtrack

The whole damn thang!

In the mood by CeCe Peniston

CeCe is back!  My ‘girls’ in the club loved some CeCe!

I’m not over you by CeCe Peniston

“Im not, not over you…over you…over you!”

If that’s your boyfriend by Meshell N’degeocello

DA BASS IS BACK!  In full effect!

But this time around it’s being thumped, slapped and plucked to death by a badass CHICK!

Baybee, Uncle Larry and Uncle Louis (Larry Graham and Louis “Thunder Thumbs” Johnson respectively for the whippersnappers) would be soooooo proud!

Get it girl!

“If that’s your boyfriend he wasn’t last night!”

Where my Queens at?  Let’s hit the floor ladies!

Taste your love by Horace Brown

Horace you so nasty!

But in a good way.

I Can Go Deep by Silk

Shiitttt!

OUT!

Unconscious…

DEAD…

“I can go deep if you let me.”

A Little Somethin’ by A Few Good Men

“Go where you wanna go

do what you you wanna do

In the day

At night it’s my way”

(Here’s a little somethin’ that’ll make you stay)

Chocolate Thai by Y?N-Vee

I don’t know nothing ’bout no weed so I have to listen to this jam metaphorically!

An allegory of sorts–but not really 😉

To be honest, I could jam to Donald Trump if he was singing over Rick James’ “Mary Jane”

No shade, that’s precisely  what these Queen Diva’s did.

Hip Hop Jams

Take it Easy by Mad Lion

I don’t know what the hell he sayin’ so all I say is:

“Take it easy, what, take it easy, what…”

That beat was sick as hell!

Now, unless I’m mistaken I did hear him say “If you touch me you must bite de dust.”

Sounds like Jamaican Patois to me!

Don’t get it twisted, Lady G got many peeps from all da islands in de Carribean mon!

What’s up Brothers and Sisters?

Regulate by Warren G. ft. Nate Dogg

Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg

Dunkie Butt by 12 Gauge

Crumblin’ Erb by Outkast:  “There’s only so much time left in this crazy world I’m just crumblin’erb…”

The Player’s Ball by Outkast

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by Outkast:  THIS ENTIRE ALBUM IS THE SHIT!

Get up get out by Outkast : With that funky ass Ceelo Green and Goodie MOB.   What y’all know ’bout that?

“Get up get out cut dat bullshit out!  Ain’t you sick and tired of havin’ to do without?”

Yessuh!  These boys gettin’ ready to change the game.

The East and West gotta start looking South baby!

Well, it is with a heavy heart that I must bid 1994 (Da 9 Quad) farewell!

Thank you for all of the many gifts and lessons that you brought me!  I’ll love you always.

May you find peace in the “Archipelago of Last Years.”

Everybody else needs to meet me in comments for the party! Bring your commentary, your jams and your memories!  BYOB!  LOL 😉

GREAT list Cuz. I was feeling all of those songs on your list. I don’t remember anything in particular that waz going on that year, for the most part. I do remember that at the end of that year, the a-holes at Robins AFB saw fit to send me to another armpit of the world. They dropped me off in the middle of a desert in Egypt.

That was when the Khobar towers thing happened. Even though I wasn’t directly involved in the incident, I did have to help with the clean-up afterwards. That act earned me a 70% disability, 50 of which resulted from PTSD from that event.
I was a happy individual when I got back but that was 1995. I’ll tell ya bout that next week.
I liked Jodeci that year. I agree with your list that Feenin’ by Jodeci was nice. I also like them Mint Condition boys.

    1. TLC – “Creep” (dem girls just too fine)
    2. Aaliyah – “Back & Forth”. (my son’s first crush)
    3. Soul for Real – “Candy Rain” (I played this song to death when I got back from Egypt)
    4. Aaliyah – “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number”
    5. Blackstreet – “Before I Let You Go”
    6. R. Kelly – “Bump n’ Grind” (Kells don’t play that)
    7. 14. R. Kelly – “Your Body’s Callin'”
    8. 37. Tony! Toni! Toné! – “Slow Wine (Slow Grind)”
    See ya in 95

    1. Aw man! I forgot about “Candy Rain” that was my baby’s jam! He used rock in his walker in time with that song!
It would tickle the shit out of me.
I love all of your additions.
As I noted in the post, this was the year that Granddaddy died so that was a sad time.
I remember when that explosion happened and I went ballistic because I thought you got caught up in that. I had my Daddy call all over Al. trying to get some information. For some reason, I remember us either talking or exchanging mail correspondence. You were reassuring your little cousin that you were all good! But you really thought I was overreacting 🙂 I wasn’t! I was heartsick!
Good is good all the time!

I think it was by letter. We may have talked too though.

I’m sure that any military member whose served overseas can attest to the fact that without loved ones like you in our corners, those trying times would have been impossible to get through.

        Thanks lil Cuz!!

        Sorry Gwin!
I missed that bit (that’s what comes of reading posts, dozy on headache painkillers!….Woken up properly now (duh!)
Yes, there’s a folksy refrain there from eras of yore.
Though when talking Arthur it’s like brass trumpets, horns, drums and a lot of loud shouting (chanting), with one poor bard in the background trying to make his lyre heard!

          Ouch Cluster Headaches! Poor you.
(I used to get its ‘friend’ Migraine, but seems to have got bored with me)
Yeh, head cleared now (bit like thunderstorms, they hang around for a while and then..all gone!).
I think it was the weather; been nagging me all week.
          Ah well…..😊y time is back!
All the best to you and yours.

        2. Yeah, headaches suck. My brother has migraines. But I ‘ve been lucky, I haven’t had one in a while. I mostly get headaches from seasonal allergies; those are not quite as bad.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  3. I love reading your little stories at the beginning! They make me smile!

You son is super handsome, and I’m thinking he looks more like you than his father! But all ya’all got the looks, so he was blessed from day one! And what a cutie he was back then!

Loved Usher and Luther! Turn the music up and the lights down low, ;D

  4. Ahh I’m late! I was coming back from my boyfriend’s house. I snuck into his house through the window while his parents were at work. We ditched Algebra to go to his house. I took a sip of a wine cooler when I was over there. Wow, I remember so many of these songs being played at the school dances in the cafeteria. I was in 7th or 8th grade. Biggie was one of my favorites! Me and my boyfriend danced to Janet and TLC at the last dance.

  5. Lady G,

What a list! 1994 was a pivotal year for me, and this list brought back SOOOO many memories. I had just come out of one of “those” relationships (with the cop) We were equally crazy and sometimes violent to each other. We loved hard, hated harder and fought just to make up.
I had to take 3 days bereavement when Nate Dogg died. I literally called my boss and said I need time off. I loved LOVED loved Regulate.
Seal is always a favorite. Working with hospice, I often hear Prayer for the Dying in my head when visiting with families towards the end. He is an unbelievably talented artist. And YASS, his Al Green cover is second to none. I think Reverend Green approves. And I think your Grandaddy would too.
Dream on Dreamer…was on the playlist I listened to while working out. Such a jazzy groove. I think CeCe was on that mix too.
Madonna’s “Take a Bow” has a deep meaning for me and I may need to blog about it, or maybe I need to go lay on someone’s couch and pay the damned copay. I had a long “taboo” co-dependent relationship and that song symbolized me cutting the last ties…”the show is over take a bow…”
Janet’s Anytime, Anyplace was the jam I often listened to while getting ready for “work”. 1994 was the year I began my side hustle in the world of escort. I will never forget watching the whole OJ drama unfold from the bed of a luxury hotel suite.
I have a HYSTERICAL story about 12 Gauge. But we need to email on that one. LOL
As always, you NEVER disappoint in throwing the best Throwback Party on the web.
    Love ya, G!

    1. Tessa girl you always got some hella tea! I am so freaking intrigued by your life!
I am also happy that this list meets with your approval. I know a lil sumthin ’bout them crazy ass relationships. But, like you, I might need to get on a couch. Let’s put a damn ‘donate’ widget on our blogs so we can raise money for our respective co-pays! LOL!!!
Yeah, “Take a Bow” was so hauntingly beautiful to me. I get your meaning.
And you know Janet showed her entire ass on “Anytime, Anyplace.” Oh YAASSSSS!
Girl you may need to spill your 12 Gauge story-is he still alive? I know he was from our hometown.
Tessa you owe me so many stories. I am keeping a list and checking it twice.
Hopefully the memories here will stir up some more goodies for you to post.
Oh and thanks for your kind words baby love!

      1. Lady G…let’s install that donate widget, yesterday! I could use a little therapy to process all the crazy-ass shit i did back in the day…and still do on occasion…if so inclined.
And I didn’t mention your sweet son. What a looker! Bet he and my oldest are close to the same age. What a HANDSOME young man!
Janet did show her ASS on that video! I forgot about that! And I meant to mention the “Get up get out” reference. I recall listening to Outkast, on my lunch break, laid up in the bed with one of my co-workers! LOL! I can’t hear that song without thinking of him.
Girl, I have so many stories to tell…some of them are not blog-worthy…some of them are too much to put into the written word…but nonetheless, life is always interesting.
And we can always share the tea!

Thanks for mentioning my baby. That joker is in his early 20’s now– but he will always be my baby! You are the same way about yours I am sure!

Oh yes honey Outkast DID that! Get up git out!
“The South got something to say!”
          -Andre Benjamin (1995)

Tessa laid up in the bed on lunch break!!!!!!!
          Hot damn!

        2. I used to call lunch, “funch” back in those days! LOL. And I am still friends with my old lover. Bless him. He couldn’t seem to get back on task when we returned from lunch, like I could. It eventually got his ass fired. I got promoted and started working on the regional team! Those are some posts that need to be written. Thanks for helping me recall that! See…you are time whisperer, Lady G! I don’t need a couch…I just need to read your posts!
Those boys of ours will always be our babies! Mine drives me nuts at times, but I love him and my other two. Did you know I have a 20 yr old, 8 yr old and a 3 year old??? Just turned 3! And no..I don’t have quittin sense. But it keeps life fun!
Gotta story about Outkast and Ludacris…again, for email only. LOL

        3. That damn Tessa! That girl is off the hook y’all!
          My girl!
“Funch?” Now that shit takes the cake!
But then your little naughty behind had ‘ol boy off his game; so much so that he lost his coins.
But you see that’s the difference between men and women. No matter what, we can keep our eye on the ball; really, no pun intended! LOL!!!
Girl I get the age difference with kids thing. But I think you took the cake!
My oldest is in his early 20’s and my baby is 10.
Chile if I had a 3 year old my ass would be bat-shit crazy!

        4. Girl you said it! I am crazier than hell with a 3 year old…my only girl…and a Diva. I think Teena Marie was reincarnated and I’m her mama. Pray for me. But it sounds like you’ve got an age split too. Makes it fun, doesn’t it?
And my old lover landed a good job afterwards. He used me as a reference! Lol. I gave him a good one. Said he was consistent in his performance. And that he expressed himself well, orally. Lol!

        5. Had to be said! And all these years later, he is STILL working in that job. Guess he learned not to put his meat where he makes his bread. LOL

  6. T. Wayne

Jodeci. R. Kelly. Mary J. Those were the albums that stayed in heavy rotation during that year! Your list is killer as always, Twin!

Sadly, it was also the year that I got the letter from my friend, telling me never to speak to her again. In fact, it was right around this time that year.

Thankfully, the music was great, and it helped me get over that. Lots of work with the school board still (2 more years to go!), and settled in to my local government job.

Thanks again for another great throwback party!

    1. Happy to see you as always Twin! This was the year of MJB and Jodeci that’s for sure.
But, of course, come ’95 Andre will make it known that “the South got something to say.” In the 9Quad, Outkast was “rolling over n**** like a 94 Lexus.”

Yup, hiding from a crazy ex husband as we speak. Not fun! Spent my time dating sane folk the end up marrying a lunatic . oh the irony! Good thing is, my munchkin was the gift of that union so no regrets.

Love your selections. Luther Vandross , R. Kelly, Janet Jackson were hot on my playlist back then too.

    Always fun stopping by. Hugs🌷
