My Jams ’95

moon-1275694_1280“My Jams” posts include adult language and controversial observations.  Song release dates may vary.  Songs are in no particular order and are not exhaustive.

I come from a family of seers.

Some aware.

Some not.

I AM aware and I do see.

I see potentials.

A few in stone.

Many things can be changed.

But not all.

Right now I see miles and miles of sand.

In the midst–an Oasis.

Soldiers.

Remnants of a tall tower.

Exploded.

There are casualties.

Some are gone.

Disquieted and discerning.

A portent?

What does this mean?

Who?

Oh my God!

Ron!

__________

Now before y’all get to googling and fact checking, let the record show that LadyG is acutely aware that we are smack dab in the bowels of 1995.

Do realize that your girl was ‘seeing’ something to come in 1996.

It was an act of terrorism on our troops in Saudi Arabia.

The Khobar Towers to be exact.

Well baby, my dear cousin Ron was there when that tower came down in an explosion.

Chile everybody in my family was calling back and forth trying to find out if he was alright. At the time, we were all afraid.

I was completely heartsick.

It was NOT good.

But I really felt for his children, wife, mom, dad, sisters and brother.

Well, thank God your boy finally called home to let it be known that he was not one of those that we lost that day.

 May they rest in peace.

We love you Ron and we are so blessed that you made it back home 😘💋

And so…

What’s poppin’?  Is everything good in your world on this cold and windy morning in 1995? You know I wanna know right?  Bring all the goods to comments.

But for now, let me break you off a couple two- twenty jams!

My Jams ‘95

Hooked On You by Silk

Okay at first when I heard the sample from the old “Ironside” TV show I was like, “ What the hell?”

Oh but then the music shifted and them brothers started singing!

Hot damn!

“There’s no living without you, got me hooked on everything you do”

“You say you’re coming back and I believe you’re coming back…”

Word to the wise:  You can’t stop grown folks from doing what they wanna do!

YAAASSS!

Anything by J Quest

“Girl I’ll do just about anything to try to turn you on ‘cause you got it going on.”

Y’all remember that one?

That was my shit!

I used to rock the hell out of that cassingle!

For the whippersnappers, that’s a cassette with one jam; maybe two on it!

Freak Like Me by Adina Howard

Closet freaks was banging the hell out of this jam!

Queen Diva Adina let it be known that she was a freak!

Lady G pleads the 5th.

“I got a freaky secret-everybody sing ‘cause we don’t give a damn about a thang.”

Tell me Groove Theory

But did you peep that damn bass all up and through?  Hell they got a freaking Upright Bass in the video.  I pray like hell that’s the bass I hear in this jam 🙂 I know it’s not 😉

When I saw Bryce with them big pretty eyes grooving with pretty Queen Diva Amel Larrieux I liked to lost my mind.

“Sweetheart now it’s time I let you know, don’t wanna rush we should take it slow…”

Shiiitttt!!!!

He’s mine Mokenstef (Remix with Grand Puba)

Yeeeeeaaaaah….

No shade, but I always thought that some of the lyrics to this song were stupid as hell.  But it empowered women who were cheated on…I guess 😉

But then I HAD to like it because they went and remixed it with a sample from Queen Diva Patrice Rushen’s classic “Remind me.”

“He may be doing you but he’s thinking about me”

Um..no…men are pretty basic in that arena.  He’s thinking about what and  who he’s doing at that point in time.  LOL!!!

Brokenhearted Brandy duet with Wanya Morris

Word on the street is that she was kinda crushing on Wanya (He’s singing on this jam) from Boyz II Men.

No matter, this was my jam.

I wish Skee-lo

“I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller, I wish I had a girl that looked good- I would call her…”

Just a fun song!

“I wish…”

I’m going down Mary J Blige

And then there was the time that Mary went and remade this Rose Royce’s classic.

That Queen did the damn thang on this!

“I’m going down..”

I dunno, but it sounds almost like they used the original track.  If not, whoever duplicated it tore that shit up!

Somethin for the honeyz by Montell Jordan

I don’t know about y’all but Lady G actually likes Montell.

He looks like he would be a cool brother to hang out with 😉

Heller, heller Monty!

“Something for the honeyz”

Brown Sugar by D’Angelo

Aw shit now!  When we heard this we knew that music was changing.

Neo-soul?  Acid jazz?

Whatever you wanna call it!

Real music is making a comeback!

You bring me joy by Mary J Blige

Did that Queen sing a song over an old Barry White track?

Yes she did!

Joy by Blackstreet

Word on the street is Michael Jackson wrote this song.  You already know LadyG cannot be bothered to google it.

But what do my ears hear?

MY VIOLINS!!!!!  They’re here again!

I just can’t with Teddy Riley right now!

Chile I was so glad he put that damn synthesizer down and sat at a piano!!!!

I LOVE this song.

By the way, I implore you to watch the video and peep the white guy that looks like Bob James conducting that mini orchestra.

Dude is so freaking on point!  He ain’t missing a damn beat!

I’ll put it in comments.  If you ain’t got time skip to 3:30 on the video.  He goes by fast so be alert!

YAAASSS!

If Only You Knew by Phil Perry

But then Phil Perry went and did a masterful version of Queen Diva Patti’s classic!

I bleeve I’ll park that one in comments too.

Don’t miss it!

Someone please remind LadyG if she forgets! LOL!

Put your body where your mouth is by Sean Levert

Hell I forgot about this one!

Go ‘head on Sean, you DID that!

RIP Brah!

You put a move on my heart by Tamia

I read somewhere that this song is not an easy song to sing.

I think it was Quincy Jones who said that.

Maybe a musician or a singer can explain why.

I got nothing.

All I know is Queen Diva Tamia kilt it!

Okaaaaay??

Down for whateva  Nuttin’ Nyce

Y’all remember them?

Oh yes baby, Lady G was rocking this one!

Lady G is down for whatever!

Let’s talk about it by Men at Large

Aw hell yeah!

“Let’s talk about it, let’s talk…about birds and bees sugar you and me gettin’ it on.”

You can’t touch it!

You simply CANNOT!

“ I don’t mean to be sweatin’ you… all I wanna do is just talk to you…”

And y’all wonder where all these 21, 22 and 23 year old chillun came from.

Babymaking music was everywhere in 93, 94, 95!

There It Is by Barry White.

The Maestro!

Barry just being Barry baby!

You and me just some squirrels trying to get…well you know the rest!

LOL!!!

Zhane’s album

The entire damn thing!  You know the one with “Crush!”

YAAASSS!

Meshell Ndegeocello’s  album

This entire damn album too!  The one with “Dredlocks”

DEAD!

All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey

They STILL play this Christmas jam some 21 years later!

Gone and get them coins Mariah!

Hip Hop Jams

Watch what you say by Guru featuring Chaka Khan  Guru!  Da man! I miss him!

Runnin’ by Pharcyde  This!!! “…’cause my pappy never told me how to knock a n**** out!”  I hollered!

Sprinkle Me by E-40

Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless by The Lost Boyz

Lady G is still grooving to Outkast!  Still!!!!!

Well, the time has come to release 1995 back into the days of yore!  LOL!

I love you 1995–Until we meet again-Goodbye!

Everybody else, you know what to do!  Bring your commentary, your memories and your jams to the comment section.

  1. great lists and reflections two thoughts Michael Jackson gave Teddy Riley the Oriignal “Pretty you thing” for “Joy”. in 2004 MJ released his box set the Ultimate collection and the original PYT Pretty young thing” the slow version is the demo which MJ gave teddy riley. MJ and Greg Philigannis cut the Oriignal. however James Ingram who wrote the fast version of PYT and had to share credit with Quincy Jones did the uptemo. a funny story about PYT and also the politics of the business.

groove theory tell Me was the baddest Bass line Groove that Rick James didn’t make in the 90’s IMO. if that Bass signature don’t have RIck James’s name and tone all over it then i just don’t know.

i was bumping that R.Kelly selt title album thank go its friday the Incognito remix was the fire
of course down low with him and the Isley brothers.

    1. YAAAASSSSS! Okaaaay?? 🙂
Very interesting story about PYT and Joy. I love hearing the inside tea of my favorite jams.
And you called it about the bass line on “Tell me.” Definitely Rick James influenced.
Kinda takes me back to that funky bassline in “Ghetto Life.”
      It was FIRE!
So glad you are enjoying My Jams 🙂

  2. AAAH Zhane!!! They play Zhane on the oldies station now lol and every time, my hubby turns to the girls like, “This used to be ya momma’s jam.” I just shake my head…now I’m somebody’s momma jammin to a back in the day track lol And shout out to the cassingle (wish I was on my phone so I could insert some emojis).

    1. LOL! I can see those line dances now!
Thanks for dropping by Paula. I like some country but, to be honest, I prefer the old songs from the late 1960’s into the early 1980’s!
The only genre that I don’t really like at all is blues! LOL
And thank you for the comment about Ron. I am sure he’ll read this before long. In the meantime, I can assure you that he appreciates your kind words.

  3. So I am late to the party again…been a crazy week at Chez Tess.

Your tribute was moving and I am so thankful that Mr. Brown returned safe and sound. I love his stories and the closeness you share is beautiful.

I was missing in action from music in 1995. I threw myself into a self-imposed hiatus of sorts that eventually ended up with me getting married to husband #1. He didn’t care for my musical vibe, so I simply stopped listening for the next couple of years. It’s a shame that I felt the need to do that. But I know why the caged bird sings, and I didn’t lose myself, just lost my way. I found my way back to myself a few years later.

However, D’Angelo was on my radar, as was the late, great Barry White.

Great post, my friend. Seer? I had a feeling you were. You pick up on the heart of what’s being said, regardless of the words on the page. That’s a gift, Lady G.

You are a gift to all of us.

    1. You are such a doll Tessa. Don’t feel bad, most women have compromised something for ‘love.’ I am so happy to hear that you found your way back. So many of us, as you know, do not.
By the way, I am humbled by your comment! Everybody here is a gift to me; I truly believe that. And I know for sure that you are.
By the way, if you haven’t already, you should read Ron’s response to this post; it’s better than the post itself. LOL!!

      1. I did read Ron’s response. It was moving. You guys are both amazing writers. I once had that closeness with my cousin, but we changed over the years and I hate to say, we are not that close anymore. We still talk, but it’s sporadic.
As far as those compromises for love. I am done with that! As I am sure you are. Life is too short to change who you are for anyone (unless it’s D’Angelo’s fine ass) and the one who truly understands us gets all of those quirks anyway.

        1. Hey Tessa!
          Thanks again!
I hope that you and your cousin reconnect in the way that you used to. There’s nothing like that kind of relationship. It’s sacred.
And YAASSSS D’Angela shole was fine but what happened? Damn!

  4. A @ moylomenterprises

There are many on your list I don’t know this time. 1995 was busy year for me, my first born was on the way and I was freaking out a bit. Music was the last thing on my mind that year. 😁
Hope I have better luck in 1996.

Always enjoy stories. Glad Ron made it home safely.

    Have a great weekend. 🌷

  5. Hey Girlfriend, don’t mind me just lolling around on your page. I should have known that I was keeping company with esteemed spirits😀 Thank you so much for the tribute my dear Gwin and I’m pleased to share the platform with your other special tributes, especially to Ron.

As you know, it’s a bittersweet visit here for me today but before I say much more about that, I liked all your videos. I’m a sucker for Phil Perry and you chose a great song. I hadn’t heard Joy before and I have to agree that It’s gorgeous and so are those great violin strings. As I recall, I was listening to Aaliyah, Tony Braxton, and one of my favorite albums that year was by Carl Anderson. I’m afraid I’ve missed a couple of campfires for you to know what was going down in my life. However, 1995 was a milestone year for me because that was when my first daughter was born. Since I had waited awhile, I gave her a special name – Donata which means gift from God. She belongs to what we call the ” born free” generation following the birth of democracy in 1994. She was born into a world I didn’t grow up in. My lullabye song for her was Carl Anderson’s “Can’t stop the rain from falling”.

Coming here today, I’m reminded of sometimes responding to your posts at midnight, sometimes in the freezing cold and that journey back into nostalgia has meant so much to me and has helped me navigate my personal journey, retrieving some of what I had lost along the way. You created the space for us to just be. I am sad to be leaving the blogging space but I am so enthralled and richer for meeting this beautiful warm Southern Belle who made me feel like I belonged among the chicken fries, cornbread, green collards and lemon ice tea on hot Summer nights. You just helped make it so worthwhile to be on WP. So I want you to remember me with a happy song – one that I love playing to pick me up and one that I now dedicate to you.

I’m going to miss you sweetheart but you know where to find me. My last stint at being a DJ goes to you sweet Lady G.
    With lots of love

    1. Wow Chevvy!
I am so glad you decided to drop by. I posted another tribute to you called, wait for it….”Meet me in Paris.”
One day I pray that happens. In the meantime I find solace knowing that I can reach you when I need to.
It feels good to know that you felt something special hanging around the blog with me. I KNOW how much I gained from you. I cannot even fully express that.
By the way, Donata is a beautiful name; I’ll bet that she and her sister are two chips off of a beautiful block-their wonderful mom!
      YAAASSSSSS!
Chevvy, I pray for peace in both of our worlds. So much going on.
Thank you for the video. I’ll always think of you whenever I hear it!
Much love and light always and keep in touch 🙂

  6. Woebegone but Hopeful

    Hi Gwin.
Reaching you through a back-up stubborn ornery laptop (main one has gone in for a health check after only 6 months- my vibes must be bad for computers).

    Serious
This was a very moving tribute. Mentioning the tragedies which are soon forgotten by the masses of folk, though I doubt if 9/11 will be forgotten. That’s most interesting about being a Seer, sometime I would like to read more about that.

    Take care

My beautiful, wise and gifted cousin does, indeed speak the truth. One of our aunts was especially gifted in this area. She was born with a caul or veil covering her eyes. Ancient folklore holds that a child born with this unique condition is gifted with special sight; a special ability to see beyond the veil which separates the world we know, from others we don’t.

I have a lesser version of this gift which allows me see and interpret even the most minute changes in a person’s inflections, facial expressions, and/or body language. My cousin is even more gifted.

As Gwin has already mentioned, I had the misfortune of being “in theatre”—the area of military operations—when the bombing of the Khobar Towers took place. The towers housed military members deployed to Saudi Arabia. They were a type of dormitory, although they looked more like a hotel.

Fortunately, I was not in the towers or in close vicinity to the towers. I was, however, enroute to my assignment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I was diverted to help clean up the mess. This gruesome and somber task, earned me a diagnosis of PTSD.

Some family members contacted me and urged me to write my loving Cousin a letter, letting her know that I was alright. Her concern would not be satiated with any less.
Cousin, that was a helluva year. Your list is a helluva list. In particular, we shared an affinity for the following songs from your list:

Brokenhearted Brandy duet with Wanya Morris
That boy Wanya sho can sang!

I’m going down/You bring me joy by Mary J Blige by Mary J Blige
    I really haven’t heard a Mary J. song that I don’t like.

    Brown Sugar by D’Angelo
This boy here was bad. He still is, but what if he hadn’t detoured along the way. I think he could have been up there with the best of them.

There It Is by Barry White.
‘Like Cuz said, “THE MAESTRO”, That’s all I gots to say bout dat!
I’d also like to add these

    2PAC – California
TONY BRAXTON – Un-break My Heart
EN VOGUE – Don’t Let Go (Love)
MINT CONDITION – What Kind of Man Would I Be
AALIYAH – If Your Girl Only Knew
    R. KELLY featuring RONALD ISLEY – Down Low

    1. Thank you so much my sweet!

Y’all that’s why I love my dear cousin so much! Our relationship is no act! He is my heart and we are very close.

Thank you so much for filling us in on some of the details that occurred that fateful day. It never occurred to me how hard it must have been for the soldiers who were tasked with clearing that area. Each one of you, no doubt, silently lamenting, “This could have been me.”
Most of use have no idea what the life of a soldier is like. We just rattle off “Thank you for your service” like a bunch of rambling parrots!
The sacrifices that you all made are countless and I am truly grateful.

And yes, we are seers. Always have been and always will be. And as you said, our Baby aunt was the first one that I know of to be acknowledged but I know that there are many more. You are definitely one; in fact, now that I think about it, we both are more likely clairsentient.
Anyway, let me go away from the woo woo stuff lest I scare away our friends!
      As for your list, YAAASSSSS!
Baby when Babyface redid “For the Lover in You” and resurrected SOLAR pioneers, Shalamar, I thought I was gonna lose it! That thang was swinging!
Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful response.
      Love you babe,
      Gwin.

1995 was the first time I could say I was 29! (but not the last LOL!) Love the list, my Twin, as always. Like B, I did some homework too. Here are my adds:

Solo-“Heaven” It’s a shame these dudes didn’t make it big. They could really, really sing.

Solo-“Blowin’ My Mind” See the comment above

Our girl and B’more’s own Maysa with her first solo joint, “What About Our Love?”

Mary J. Blige “I Love You” I like the original a ton, but Smif N Wessun on the remix puts it over the top.

Just a few goodies. It’s been a minute since I heard that Silk track, but hearing it today reminded me how much I liked it back then. Thanks for the throwback party once again!

    1. YAAAASSSS! 1995 was the joint. All kind of killers that year. And yes Twin, your list is the shit!
I loved Solo, one my faves by them was “Touch me” I think that one was from ’98 or ’99. I loved that song.
It had that smooth ass old school feel to it.
Did you remember the joint by JQuest on this list?
So glad to see you here.
Always a fun going back through the years with my Twin.

Wow, that J Quest goes back a ways. I’m sure I heard it plenty, but I don’t remember it.

The year sounds about right for “Touch Me.” I loved that song too. I think Raphael Saadiq had a hand in that one.
