Halloween! It’s What We Do

Halloween!  It’s what we do 😉

By ‘we’ I mean me, my son, Sir R, and my daughter, Lady J!

Warning:  If you are one of those folks that don’t do Halloween for religious purposes, I respectfully encourage you to feel free to browse and find another post that is more to your liking.

Lady G is not about being offensive.

So, with that said, please bypass!

Now, for those of you who are either covert or overt lovers of Halloween, I urge you to stick around and let me stimulate some of your fondest fall holiday memories!”

OK, as the opening line implies, I am a Halloween nut!

You see it all started back in the mid to late 1970’s when Mama would take me and Tack trick or treating.

We’d have a ball knocking on doors in order to collect and stockpile chocolates, bubblegums, and hard candies.

We trashed the candy corn–but who didn’t?

Candy corn is to Halloween as fruitcake is to Christmas!

Yuck!

Anyway, for my brother and I, October was an all around exciting month because, apart from trick or treating, we’d also get to go to the fair!

Well….that’s if we raked up all the freaking pine straw in the front yard first!

Yeeeaaaaah, that was one of Daddy’s rules.

Nevertheless, we were happy to rake the yard so that we could hurry to the fair.

The sights, the smells, the music! Talk about a good time!

Whaaaa?

Don’t worry, I’ll tell you more about the fair later in the month.

Anyway, back to Halloween.

As I am sure you can recall, during the week of Halloween, the major television networks would air old scary movies and Halloween specials!

Remember, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?”

How ’bout The classic Disney version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow?”

Both of those are part of my collection!

YAAASSS!!

Back then, Tack and I lived for those cartoons!

Every time we saw the little ‘intro’ that the networks played to indicate that a “Special Presentation” would be replacing regular TV programming, we were SHOOK!!!!!

To the core!

Seriously, what kid in the ’70’s didn’t get excited knowing that “60 minutes” was being replaced with “The Paul Lynde Halloween Special?”

Now wait a minute…

Who in fresh hell was Paul Lynde?

Most of us had not a clue, but, the fact was, he had done a Halloween Special–and that’s all we needed to know 😉

Those were the good old days, and I simply refuse to let them go!

Therefore, I go ALL out for Halloween!

Baby, I take it much farther than my Mama ever did!

To date, my partners in crime are my kids and my Dad!

Just so you know, for Mama, Halloween was pretty cut and dry. She gave out candy and took us trick or treating.

That’s it! That’s all!

PERIOD!

As for Tack, these days, he could take it or leave it.  Although he was younger than I was, he outgrew Halloween rather early.

I never did!

And so…

Today, Lady J and I will put out all of the Halloween decorations.  We should have done it sooner but we got busy over the weekend.

Anyway, along with our other Halloween festivities, Lady J and I will be watching all kinds of scary movies for the remainder of the month.

Oh yes,  I have some serious opinions about scary movies.

Look Lady G the only reason I read this is because I promised in my oath I took when I became Lady Marie of the Duchy of England LOL, that I would read all your posts whether they be long or short. That is the ONLY reason. I’m a party-pooper and do not check for Halloween in any way, shape or form, especially them bl**ted kids knocking off my door knocker, ringing down my door bell wanting to give me trick or treat. As far as I am concerned I wish they’d all fly off on a broomstick. So Lady G, have I made myself clear?! Seriously even though I, like your twin do not relish Halloween, I loved this piece. Your enthusiasm and your love of life shine through. I loved the exchanges between you and Tareau. It was worth it coming here just to read those. YAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!

      But isn’t just like Lady Marie to be kind enough to suffer through it in order to keep the unity of our respective dominions in tact! LOL!!!!!!

      1. ROTFLMAO!!!!! I know I can rely on a GOOD LAUGH from the honourable and most esteemed Lady G formerly? ( must check) of the duchy and environs of Chicago. The esteemed Lady is indeed correct in her assumption that one (the royal one!) does not care for that occasion, which comes around far too frequently on one’s social calendar. LOL
        But as you so rightly say, Lady Marie does not wish to rock the boat concerning our very robust and newfound unity.
        Peace unto you my good Lady and may we continue to harbour entente cordial. In other words may we continue to have a bl**dy good laugh every time we speak! Yaaaaassssss!!!!

          Take care Lady G and I hope you didn’t strain your back or your mouth doing all that apple dunking. Do you do that in the States? Do you even know what I’m talking about?? It’s when you put a load of apples in a basin of water and then try to get one out just using your mouth. I guess you’re probably likely to know this as you are THE QUEEN of Halloween Celebrations. LOL

  2. My kiddies are huge fans of Halloween. If it weren’t for them I’d be cuddled under a blanket binge watching old horror movies. My oldest is 13 and she still likes to dress up. The smile they have while getting dressed in their costumes, running from door to door to collect all of that sugary goodness is priceless😏

  3. I also love Halloween, Lady G! You brought back some great memories. Charlie Brown, and I saw Fat Albert lurking in your Halloween collection photo. Good Lord, Paul Lynde? I haven’t thought of him since Hollywood Squares! I always loved the chill in the air and of course, the candy. But you know what I loved the most? The chance to be someone else! The costumes, the make up. I always did like to play. Thanks for making me smile!

      As I have said to some others, Charlie Brown is a MUST for us, we never miss it–we can’t because I have that one too! LOL!

  4. I am a fellow Halloween-a-phile! I cannot get enough of it! As you know we do a gallery wall (aka shrine) of all things Halloween! I light luminaras out front in the driveway for the entire week leading up to the big day. And there’s scary movies on blast around here.

    The Bing Crosby, “Sleepy Hollow” cartoon.is a FAVE! That shit used to scare me as a kid! But I loved it. And the little ones started watching “Great Pumpkin” in August. We visited a pumpkin patch and my 8 year old started reciting lines as if he was Linus. It was funny as hell!

    Can’t wait to read your scary movie reviews! Be sure to include Vincent Price in there! I know y’all have already been watching him this season!

      A lot of people don’t even remember that version of ‘Sleepy Hollow.’ Can you believe that? Man you don’t know what you’re missing if you haven’t seen it.
      Charlie Brown is a MUST around these parts. I get my life by watching Linus go in on Charlie Brown at the end of the program, “He’ll come next year…you’ll see!”
      That damned thing been coming for 50 years and it ain’t got here yet.

      1. Honey, I used to leave presents for my firstborn, from the Great Pumpkin on the front porch, by our Jack O Lantern…with a note saying the ‘pumpkin was very sincere’….He bought into it for years! LOL
        And he dressed up as the WWI flying ace one year! So you know it’s a staple around here! LOL
        Wish we lived closer so we could visit each other’s haunts on Halloween!

          That is so freaking cool to me!
          I did all that same sort of magical stuff for my babies. To this day my 22 year old admits that he is so glad that I did. Said he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
          I still do that kinda thing 🙂

    As far as Halloween goes, i could never really get into it as an adult. In fact, my youngest daughter just reminded me of the year I thought I’d just sit the bowl of candy outside of the door to last throughout the night lol. Like just yesterday, she reminded me of this faux pas. smh It lasted five minutes girl.

    Can’t wait to read the other posts, especially the one about scary movies. I LOOOOVE scary movies.

      Yeah girl you was tripping with that candy ! Chile it lasted five minutes prolly ’cause one kid got it all! LOL!!
      As far as comments, I’m finding that some people are Halloween folks and some people are not.
      That said, I’ve also had several people say they like scary movies.
      I like scary but I hate graphic/psychopathic gratuitous violence. To me, that’s not scary that’s just insane.

  6. It’s pretty fun! I enjoy taking my son to his fall festival at school and trick or treating. He already decorated with my grandma. Lol. It was a blast taking him to Disneyland and Disney World in October. We trick or treated and he dressed up there. My mom makes candy apples. They’re delicious! Do you get a costume?? P.S. I don’t like scary movies! 😂

    1. Yes girl! We have also been to Disney World in October! All those Mickey Mouse Jack-o-Lanterns are so cool.
      What’s your son gonna be this year? Lady J is still deciding. I always bought costumes for the kids but, most times, I kinda make up something for myself. I’m usually a Witchy woman or something along those lines. Do you dress up?
      BTW, most horror fans are into movies that I would NEVER watch.

      1. We had a blast in Disney World! I think he wants to be someone from Star Wars again! I probably won’t dress up this year. I’ve dressed up to work before as a cat, a French maid, I forget what else!

  9. Looking forward to images of your final Halloween Fest! I love it, too. Lived way out in the country when I was a kid, so my brother and I trick or treated from the front door to the back door. As you say so well … YAAASSSSS! Mama was a closet Halloween lover and went all out on “the day” and prayed forgiveness on Sunday. She would rig scary ghosts in the pantry that were made with ironing boards, sheets and transparent masks that were backlit. When the door to the pantry was opened you “shat yerself” for sure. We went into town (and I mean SMALL town) one year and went from house to house like “regular kids” and I was so dumbfounded by it all I fell off a porch backwards into some bushes. Hurt my pride more than anything. Was glad I was wearing a mask; one of those stinky old rubber ones that made ya sweat. That’s right up there with, “When I was a kid I had to walk five miles in the snow!” LMAO 😉

      I just LOVE reading your responses! Especially when you throw in a random YAAASSSS! Every time I see that I just have to laugh.
      Yeah, those halloween masks were awful; I’ve worn my share! You could hardly breathe in those things!
      Anyway, I am so glad that you had at least one experience trick or treating–sorry bout that pride thing though! LOL!!!

  11. October is the kick-off to all things good! Love Halloween, but you knew that, 😉

    I was going to create a zombie graveyard this year, but you know I got occupied last month so I didn’t get to make the zombies. I’ll have to just pull out my old crappy headstones and lights and do what I can. I have this really cool skull and bones that’s noise activated and I hang it really close to the door, then it goes off (starts shaking and rattling) and scares the hell out of the kiddies, bwahaha. I have a CD too that plays scary noises. Oooo, I’m getting excited for Halloween!! 😀

    1. I LOVE that idea! Kids look forward to that kinda stuff! We have a scary songs CD that we play in the car to get in the spirit! No pun intended!

  12. You got me excited for Halloween 🙂 My favorite memory was dressing up in themes with my brothers. Masters of the Universe came out one year and they had costumes from the movie. So, I invaded my brother’s closet and dressed myself as Teela. Let’s just say, it did not look pretty. Luckily my mom can sew, and I designed my own superhero costume. I carried on the tradition for my nieces one year and it was a lot of fun.

  14. I use to go all out when my two were young. They loved it and still like to share their memories with me. 🙂 I don’t do near as much now that they’re grown, but I still love scary movies. 🙂

    As for the candy corn and fruitcake, I’ve found that there is usually no gray area–either you love them or hate them.
    And you gotta know I loved Paul Lynde :)—He was my Uncle Arthur! LOL 🙂

  17. have my house decorations up now for over a week, yessss, love Halloween. It was the one day out of the year we could be anyone we dreamed of being. Always was a big believer in dreams coming true….we used pillowcases to gather our goods, trading candy afterwards, and it took me years but now I actually kind of dig candy corn…still hate fruitcake. Looking forward to seeing the pics of all the decorations adorning your spooky mansion 🙂 and I remember Paul Lynde…gosh, I must be showing my age 🙂
