To the Dogs

I’ve always loved animals-especially dogs 🙂

It’s a trait that I share with my Dad.

I think he got it from his Dad.

As a kid, I can remember Daddy bringing home sick, hurt or stray dogs.  He’d take them out back and I’d watch and assist as he nursed them through to recovery.

Believe me, we cared for all kinds of dogs; everything from German Shepherds to Doberman Pinschers to Cocker Spaniels to Beagles and every breed in between.

Neither of us could bear the idea of an injured, sick or lonely animal being left to fend for itself.

Even in later years, I can remember running in the house yelling something like, “Daddy, you gotta go get that cat down the street-some dogs are after him!”

Or

“Daddy, you gotta get that bird that just ran into the window, he landed in a pile of ants and he can’t move.”

Yessir!  The animal protectors!  Daddy and me!

And…Lady J !

I am so happy to say that the ‘animal protection trait’ was passed on to my dear Lady J.

Ever since J was a tot, she’s been looking after the animals.

In fact, she aspires to be a vet.

She can tell you just about anything you wanna know about any animal; all of which she learned from her highly specialized collection of books on the subject.

It’s not unusual for her to regale me with an interesting- random- animal fact.

Things like, and I quote, “Mom, did you know that sea turtles can’t retract their heads back into their shells like regular turtles?”

Of course, I’ll be like, “No, baby, Mama never really thought about that.”

Good times!

So here’s the latest on our dear little animal fairy…

Lady J, who started “The Dog Club” at her school, decided to organize a bake sale in order to raise money to, in her words, “help take care of the dogs who are waiting to be adopted.”

You’ve seen these dogs at places like PetSmart, right?  They’re usually outside or in the back of the store.

Lady J loves visiting those dogs.

And, to her delight, about a year or so ago, a friend of mine who volunteers for a dog adoption organization, allowed Lady J to ‘babysit’ a set of puppies.

That little sister was in hog heaven!

Anyway, back to the bake sale.

You will be pleased to know that Lady J and the other members of “The Dog Club” proudly raised a whopping $8.50.

Note:  The bake sale was only for students in her class of 20.  Cookies were priced at $.25 each.

Tack said she should have upped the price!

Oh well! I am sure that every little bit helps 🙂

By the way, Lady J and her Godmother will take the money to PetSmart today after her knitting class 😉

YAAASSS!

And Lady G will chill out here with you 🙂

But seriously, I have to say how proud I am of Lady J for continuing a family legacy and for establishing her own way of being a “Protector of the Animals.”

You go girl!

  2. Adore ’em too!! My dear late mom had a Yorkie – not the teacup, the next size up. What a cute affectionate lap dog he was! Had to pry him off her when the Paramedics came to take her to hospital for treatment last time. (Congestive heart failure at 92.) that was in 2005. Sighhhhh.

  3. OMG G! You and I, two halves of the same coin! (mangled metaphor, but you get the idea! LOL) I ADORE dogs too!! AND CATS!! I have a gorgeous kitty now – I’m just too lazy to get up at 7 and walk a doggie – especially in our winter weather, like in a snowstorm? NOOOOOO! So instead I have Annie with an Attitude! You can see my Annie here: https://crossedeyesanddottedtees.wordpress.com/2015/12/15/my-cat-from-heaven/
I think your daughter is FAB for doing the bake sale!! She’s so proactive! May I make a tiny suggestion BTW? That you call her LI’L Lady J. …Cuz otherwise the name is so similar to yours, and I for one, being a consumer of the Oil of Old Lady as mentioned in other parts, will get confoosled!
Love this post, including the great pics!!! I’ll be baaaaack!

    1. That metaphor is right up there with “Sailing into the fields of happiness!” I just made that up because I love a good mixed metaphor.
Oh and thanks for your other suggestions.
Clearly, cats are easier to manage but there’s something about dogs that I can’t resist.

    Love dogs!
Mine is actually a rescue from the ASPCA.
She was just 7 months old at the time and now she’s 9. She and my munchkin are inseparable. Munchkin also wants to be a vet but being a teacher is also up there on her list. So we’ll just have to wait n see which one wins.

Congrats to Lady J and her dog club. What a thoughtful endeavor!

Best wishes for a great week to you and yours. Hugs🌷

    1. Thank you so much A for reading this one. I love that Munchkin wants to be a teacher and a vet! Kids at that age want to help everything and everybody. They are so bright eyed!
Our job is to keep that light shining for as long as we can 🙂
Best wishes to you and your family as well!

        Absolutely.

Her experience with daycare, Pre-k and now kindergarten has been favorable. She loves going to school or daycare and that’s a great testament to the teachers and providers around her.

Then of course our dog was here long before she was born so it all comes naturally to her.

People used to ask me if I would get rid of my dog when my baby was born. Why? Because my dog is a pitbull! How ridiculous I would think to myself. My dog was and still is the ultimate protector. She never let just anyone near us to ‘oooh’ and ‘ahhh’ over my newborn. I secretly loved that 😁

She’s still very protective of us and in my situation, where trusting people has now become a bit of an issue after my ex, she’s an important part of our family. Dogs rock! ☺

        1. Very important that she loves school and I sooooo get the protective nature of dogs.
When I was about 10 or 11 I had two Dobermans. One named Demon and the other was Princess!
Princess was even more fierce than Demon. LOL!!!
          Go figure.
Nobody wanted to come over to play with me 🙂
Anyway, that bond between Munchkin and your pit will last for a lifetime! Dogs are so loyal! I love that about them 🙂

  7. Woebegone but Hopeful

    Hi Gwin
This is a lovely post; just shows how ordinary people are the best.
Congratulations and applauses to your daughter for carrying on the tradition and the bake sale
(Baby sitting puppies…I bet that memory is never going to grow old!)
All the best to you and yours

        1. As I think more about it I guess I understand if people don’t have an animal but I don’t get people who can’t see any value in them or who don’t care what happens to them or even worse, someone who actually harms them.
BTW, I actually took horseback riding lessons later in life — I fell in love with them!
One of my and Ron’s cousin used to rescue horses but I’m not sure if she still does it. Her daughter jumps in competitions.

    1. Awww,
      Thanks Tessa!
Actually her Godmother said the total was more like $12; to which her and her husband added $18 –for a grand total of $30.00 🙂
That should at least buy a little dog food.
      LOL 🙂

      1. I think that is great.
My parents were the same way…we always fed stray animals and often found them good homes. It’s important to pass that compassion for animals on to our children.
That little Lady J is a special girl…just like her Mama!

        1. YES! Funny story…we took in a stray yellow tabby cat when I was about 10. Looked just like Morris, but instead we called him Maurice. He was one bad MF. Dogs feared him. My beagle would walk on the other side of the yard when Maurice was in his sight. My folks had him for about 15 years, before he passed. Best cat we ever had!
