Cube Steak and Cornbread Dressing with Fresh Collard Greens and Tomatoes

YAAASSS!

Lady G threw down today!

Uh huh!

😉

So if you’ve been following me then you already know that I love to cook and eat all sorts of food.

Name a continent and I can guarantee you that I have cooked and eaten a dish from that locale.

I love ’em ALL!

But…

Around here, if it’s Sunday, it’s all about soul food BABY!

You better get into it!

Seriously, I learned to cook by watching Mama.

Mama NEVER used recipes; the ingredients and directions were all in her head.

Everything was by heart.

Or, better yet, soul!

And now, here I am, many years later, cooking the same meals that I remember–straight from Mama’s kitchen.

Come on over y’all!

I got a plate waiting just for YOU!

So tell me, do you love to cook?

If so, who taught you?

What are some of your favorites?

Let’s discuss in comments 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and have a great week 🙂

    1. Hey Twin!
      You ready to eat?
      I feel ya…
It really isn’t easy to cook for one but I have found that many singles cook for an army and just pack it into individual portions. Hey, at least that way they don’t have to keep thinking about what to cook everyday 😉

Sometimes I’ll make a chicken dish with stuffing and swiss cheese, or I’ll do on with French onion soup mix and golden mushroom soup and rice.

        2. Yes. That sounds like a variation of swiss baked chicken which I love. I haven’t thought about making that in awhile.
You just gave me an idea.
          🎶That’s what Twins are for…..LOL!!!
What about The Lady P? What are your faves from her?

She taught me those…and rice pudding! Cakes, sweet potato pie, homemade root beer. She likes to bake sweets and cakes, not that she couldn’t cook. She used to cook in a restaurant next to a bar when I was younger. Fried everything LOL….but there were pork chops and chicken, greens and potato salad, and of course, chitterlings. I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t really have a favorite, because I liked just about everything she made. Except liver and onions.

        4. See, I knew The Lady P had it going on in the kitchen.
Mama cooked everything you just mentioned except for the cakes. She was NOT a baker but she could make a mean sweet potato pie. My Dad liked her banana pudding too.
I was telling Tessa that Mama’s sisters are the bakers. So was her mother.
I guess she missed out on that lesson, homegirl was prolly somewhere cussing somebody out LOL!
Did I mention that Diva E wasn’t no joke?

  3. All I can say Lady G is Mmmmm…. pass me the plate! I will admit, I am spoiled. My husband loves to cook and he makes the best artisan pizza. As a matter of fact, we had an extra cheese, Italian sausage & mushroom za today. Delish!

Agree, I don’t have any kids. So for the most part I enjoy the freedom. My wife broke her foot recently so I’m doing most of the work – cooking and cleaning.

lol I guess that’s good. I looked them up on Wikipedia and I didn’t know the lead singer in the early 70s accidentally killed himself. Their style of music changed a lot from the 70s to the 80s due to their record companies. Interesting history about them. So you really inspired me Lady G!

Yes. I have there 40th anniversary album that has 30 songs on it and really explored it. Talk about a evolving group as far as sound. There ballads are powerfully lush.

  4. I like to cook but I’m just so tired when I get out of work. My mom and grandma have taught me how to cook. I mostly know how to cook Mexican food. I suck at making rice though! 😂 I’ve never had collard greens. Is it spinach?? It all looks GOOD, Gwin!

    1. Hey Lisa!
Girl, I think I rolled off my bed when you hollered: “Is that spinach.”
Naw, my friend, the closest thing that I think that you might be familiar with to collards would be kale.
In the South, we cook collards until the leaves are tender.
      Talk about good!
      LOL!
And girl, you better learn how to cook rice!
      Rice is a MUST !

    Lady G,

Like I said earlier…what time should I be there for dinner? It looks SOOOO GOOD!
To answer your question…I learned from my Mama and my entourage of “second mamas”…the nosey neighbor who taught me how to make the best potato soup on the planet,,,my Godmother who taught me how to properly fix a steak dinner…and my Aunt Sis who taught me how to make her mac-n-cheese. No recipes, EVER. It was all from the heart!
    Seriously…when can I come get a plate?

    1. Aww…I am so glad you stopped by.
Girl, you know I got your plate saved.
You added something important by mentioning all of the other people who contributed to our learning.
Like you, I’ve had a couple of second mamas and friends to teach me a thing or two in the kitchen. My aunties could throw down too so I learned a lot by watching them.
      Still ain’t wrote nuthin down!
      LOL!!!

As they say…it takes a village to raise a child and I was always thankful to have a group of second mamas…I loved my mama, but she wasn’t the warm/fuzzy type. Lucky for me, the others were and it was a good blend…and it expanded my culinary repertoire!
But I do wish I had my Aunt’s caramel cake recipe…it’s the only one she ever wrote down and NO ONE can find it!

        Liked by 2 people

        1. Now that’s tragic, a missing caramel cake recipe? WTF!
          How does that happen! LOL!!!
BTW, My Mama wasn’t particularly warm and fuzzy either but she was my heart and we were hers. LOL!!
Queen Diva E did NOT even play!

Sounds like she and Ms. Bonnie were cut of the same cloth! Mine didn’t play either…sweet to everyone, but HARD on her own. Glad she was that way!
The Queen Diva E didn’t happen to leave behind a caramel cake recipe, did she? LOL! I am always on the lookout!

          Liked by 2 people

        3. Ironic you should ask…Diva E could cook her ass off but she did NOT bake.
          But her sisters? Whaaaaaa?
          Different story baby.
My aunt Bobbie Sue can make a sour cream pound cake that you would eat off the floor 🙂
I’ll ask them if they have one for caramel cake.
