Alternate Title: That time we became Black Belts
Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas (Released 1974)
Just a fun song!
When I was little I remember doing my faux ‘Kung Fu’ routine all over the house to this jam!
Who knew that I’d actually go on to earn my Black Belt?
I sure’s hell didn’t!
But life happened… and I later gave birth to a son who was interested in martial arts.
One day, unbeknownst to me, my Dad signed him up for Taekwondo class, informed me of his actions, said his goodbyes and promptly went the hell back home to Alabama!
WTF?
Homeboy stuck me with a new project.
Thanks Daddy!
And so it went—-me taking Sir R to weekly Taekwondo practice.
One day, my son’s instructor challenged me to start taking the adult classes that he held at night.
It is important to note that, during those days, Lady G did not back away from a challenge.
Needless to say, I started attending and it was on!
You see, my instructor was very crafty.
Shortly after we started, he went ahead and ordered our Black belts and put them on display.
Everyday when my son and I went to practice we could see our Black belt high up on a wall for the entire galaxy to see!
I’ll be damned if I wasn’t gonna get that thing!
And so…
About 3 years later we were there!
In fact, my son and I were this instructor’s first mother and son First degree Black Belts!
Sir R was 9 years old.
YAAASSSS!
We stepped up to the plate baby!
Which brings me to today’s affirmation:
My word is bond! Whatever I choose to do, I WILL do!
Just don’t hurt nobody in the process!
LOL!!!
Here’s Carl….

I’d love to hear about a time when you had to rise to a challenge!
Holler at me in comments!
Lady G 😘💋
That’s pretty cool Gwin! Did it change you and your son’s relationship? Just asking…cause you know I envision an entire story about you and your son in this class earning each level over three years.

Hey K!!!!!
LOL!!
We weren’t in the same class but we progressed through at the same rate.
I sure would love to know what story you envisioned!
Coming from you, I’ll bet it’s interesting, witty and funny 🙂

I’ve had many situations which required me to rise to the occasion: entering the AF; Basic Training; my first leadership position etc.. Lately, I’ve been playing around in the Public Speaking area. That’s probably the toughest. It’s been said that public speaking is second only to death, in its “fear factor”.
Great post Lady and thanks for the challenge!!

First of all, Lady G, I love this song! Congrats on obtaining your black belt. I am extremely impressed. I would have to say that one of the challenges that I faced in my life was losing 70 lbs. It was tough, it was grueling at times but I did it! My hats off to you and Sir R!

Beautiful post lady g. But we know you are lying about “back in the day, lady g wouldn’t back down from any challenge” ummmm I think it still applies today. That is awesome that your son is so gifted because of your hard work. I can’t think of a time when I had to rise to a challenge necause my whole life is a challenge.

Hello Lady G! 😊
When someone tells me I can’t do something I will prove to myself and others I can. I’ve had a few people in my life think I can’t write.
