Mama’s On The Tree!

Mama on porch
My Mama

2016 marks the 5th Christmas without Mama.

So, as you might imagine, this can be a very difficult time of year for me, my brother, and my kids-not to mention my Dad who misses her terribly.

Of course, the first Christmas without her was extremely difficult as she had not been long gone.

Oh yes loves, please believe, that first Christmas, Lady G was a hot mess!

You see, Mama loved Christmas and she adored Christmas Carols!

And because those freaking Christmas Carols were being played EVER-Y-WHERE, a hot mess got even hot messier!

Let me affirm that it was not unusual, that year, for Lady G to find herself running out of Publix with snot and tears flowing North, South, East and West!

Maybe ‘mess’ is NOT the best word to describe the resulting mayhem!

Anyway…

No matter where I went, I was forced to listen to all of her favorites, including:

“Merry Christmas Baby” by Otis Redding

“Please come home for Christmas” by Charles Brown

“The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole

“Everyday will be like a Holiday” by William Bell

“Christmas just ain’t Christmas” by the O’Jays

“Santa Claus is comin’ to town” by The Jackson Five

“Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” by The Temptations

And of course, the ‘Tempting Tempts’ version of “Silent Night.”

Baby, every time I heard one of these little ditties, I melted in tears like Frosty!

And so…

One day, after the 78th Christmas carol meltdown, I went shopping for some holiday decorations when…lo and behold…there appeared Mama in the form of a beautiful Black Christmas Angel!

Y’all, I think I trampled some folks in my haste to grab that Mama-esque heavenly body!!!!!

Best believe I grabbed her, purchased her, took her home, place her atop my Christmas tree and proclaimed:

“Look at Mama on the tree!”

And from that Christmas to this one, Mama sits proudly on the tree watching over us all!

Christmas has been pretty good ever since!

Merry Christmas to you all!

With Love,

Lady G 😘💋

P.S. I still have to wear headphones at the store in order to keep my composure!

  1. Great piece! I feel this. Sorry about your mom Lady G. Loss in general is tough, nonetheless around the holidays.

Where did you find that black angel!? I have been looking all over for one! We have a white angel that we could put at the top of the tree buttttttt I don’t play those games so the tree has been angel-less for quite some time , lol.

Awe…I know you miss your precious Mama. I’m so sorry Darlin but I’m so happy you found Mama angel for the tree topper. I bet she’s looking down from heaven so proud 💗

  3. Holidays are hard in the absence of parents or grandparents. My grandfather used to play Otis Redding all the time. Still to this day I can’t listen to Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay without that tinge in my heart. I can’t even imagine what you feel when missing your beautiful mom.

I liked that you started a new tradition in her memory-finding her angel to watch over you. When I lived abroad, I started collecting glass ornaments that reminded me of family. Let’s just say I could use a second tree 🙂 Happy Holidays! It’s truly been a joy to follow your blog.

    1. Aww….Thank you Ellie 🙂
“Dock of the Bay” still does a number on me too!
      Mama loved “The Big O!”
And…it makes me very happy to know that you enjoy my blog just as much as I enjoy yours! 💖

  4. Hey Lady G, I’d like to sympathise but I think it’s best for me to say thank you on behalf of all of us that you had the Mama you had. Seeing your list of her favorite Christmas songs reminds me of how we found each other, music being our mutual love and Mama Eva being the one to sow the seeds of soul in you. She lives on in your heart Girl and celebrate that fact.. I’ll play the Temptations’ Silent Night and toast to the gift your Mama left behind. I’m sure she smiles each time you smile so no need to be sad. As you say, give thanks for the blessing you had in the influential character you had in your mother.

I hope that you and your family will have a blessed Christmas and great abundance in the new year! Chevvy!😘😘😘😘

    1. Wow what a beautiful response 🙂
And yes, Mama planted musical seeds that brought you and I together in order to share some really good times.
As you toast, please know that I am toasting right back at you dear friend.
Many blessings to you and your family Chevvy! I know that you’re in a different season but the sentiment remains the same! Merry Christmas! 💋

  5. I’m so sorry about your mom, Gwin. I can imagine it’s a hard time for you and your family right now. My mom has one of these same angels on her tree too! The one she has has blonde hair though. Her whole Christmas tree is filled with angels of different shapes and sizes. Just think when you hear one of the songs she liked, she’s looking over you.

  6. Woebegone but Hopeful

This a truly moving post Gwin. Music will always bring back memories, or strike up emotions, even with the first few bars.
It was brave of you to hang on there with those songs, your Mama would be watching and nodding approval I’m sure. And she’ll be there with your this Christmas.
A Happy Christmas to your and your family Gwin.

  7. Sorry about your Mama, Lady G. It has been 4 years since my Mom passed away. So I can sympathize & empathize with you. The first couple of years are still difficult but with the passage of time it lessens. Every day I think about her. Have a Happy Holiday & I am so glad that she is an angel watching over you.

    1. I am sorry about your Mom as well Susan. You understand how it feels.
Like you, there is no day that passes that I don’t think of my Mom.
But I am blessed that she was here with me when I needed her most.
You know, I often feel sorry for people who lost their mothers at very young ages–especially girls who need that female guidance.
Happy holidays to you and your family and remember you also have an angel watching over you too 🙏🏾

Now I know it wasn’t easy to post those Christmas songs…but you pushed through. Thanks for sharing that story and the memory, even if it is difficult for you. But Mama’s On The Tree now, so she will be watching you…
