Your New Year’s “To Do” List

Alternate Title:  Your New Year’s What NOT “To Do” List!

Like a lot of folks raised in the South, Mama had some STRONG beliefs about what you could or could NOT do on New Year’s Day.

And baby, we all knew to cooperate- or ELSE!

Anyway, without further adieu, Lady G shall now act as your personal New Year’s Compliance Officer for 2016-2017!

Here goes…

What NOT to do on New Years Day:

  1. Wash hair ; you are washing someone out of the family if you do.
  2. Wash clothes; Why? See rule 1. (Just to be safe, she extended that to drying clothes as well).
  3. Have a Christmas tree, including any associated decorations, still on display.
  4. Allow a woman be the first person to enter your home after midnight.
  5. If you are in doubt, please contact me, your personal New Year’s Compliance Officer, in comments before proceeding with most ANY action 🙂

According to Mama,  a violation of any of these rules could lead to death, destruction or worse…

By the way, we’re not done…

You must also prepare/procure and consume:

  1. Green leafy vegetables (Collards, Turnips, Mustards or Kale) to attract foldable money for 2017.
  2. Black-eyed Peas for good luck in the new year; some say they are also good for attracting coins.

In addition, you should also have some money (debit or credit cards will not suffice) in your pocket when the new year arrives.  This ensures that 2017 will not find you…for lack of a better word…BROKE!

Remember, whatever you’re doing when the New Year comes in is what you will likely be doing for the rest of the year!

Uh oh….

I don’t know about you but Lady G shall be praying and meditating!

  9. I have a bag of mixed greens in the fridge… will that work? But I don’t think I have any black-eyed peas… hmmm, I might be a bit short on luck this year, 😀

  10. good thing….a little too late, of course I’m on my third load of laundry, and hanging on the line too I might add in this gentle southern breeze, always carry coin in the pocket but at midnight i was in bed and Ii don’t sleep on my stack of millions…in case you were wondering….as if I had millions….just millions of good dreams. No woman here yet, just me walking through the door, do I count? and crab cakes, cheese sticks and tater skins for the game today….no green things, unless onions in the cakes count….I think he put some in there….sooo….gonna be dire for me I suppose ❤ ha, best wishes my Lady and happy new year to you too! and the fam of course ❤

  12. We learned at my grandmother’s knee that things done on 12/31 pretty much summed up the old year, and things done 1/1 predicted the new. Unfortunately, if you start a full day early (12/31) trying with all your might to be PERFECT, the chances only increase that you will fall flat on your face. And there goes the New Year! :)))

  13. The laundry is something that won’t be done. As for avoiding the hair washing, does dry shampoo count, lol? We have a weird tradition of eating chili on New Year’s. The area of PA where we are from had a tradition of eating pork and sauerkraut for good luck. Once I moved out of the house, I decided to make my own tradition because that sure wasn’t working out for me! I’m such a rebel. I hope you and yours have a terrific 2017. I am most certain we will be having more adventures in the very near future.

      I love hearing about different traditions. I could definitely do chili but sauerkraut is stretching it.
      I can guarantee you that we will have more adventures quite soon 🙂

    Ok…I’m down with most of these “don’ts” but #3 I’m going to tempt fate on. It has been tradition in my family that the Christmas tree stays up through New Year’s Day. You can take it down on New Year’s Day, but it has to be up when the New Year comes in. And I’m up too late now, since I have to dash across a few thresholds a little bit later; but I had to make a comment here.

    Nothing to do with the New Year but, a superstition nonetheless; I heard once that you don’t hang a horseshoe upside down (e.g. your pic), because the luck will spill out. However, I’m withholding my endorsement of that claim due to the following incident.

    Once, while “on leave” from the Air Force, I returned to Cuthbert for a 2 week vacay. While home, my Dad and I visited his 1st cousin Creek, of “Creek Can’t Fish” fame.

    Creek was hanging a horseshoe over his barn door for luck, which was great, except that I had heard that hanging the horseshoe upside down, allowed the luck to run out. I told Creek of my concern, so he dutifully uprighted the shoe.

    That next year, Creek contracted prostate cancer and later passed on from it.

    I occasionally wonder if Creek would still be here, if I’d kept my comments to myself; or, would doing so, be acknowledging the veracity and “power” of superstitions?

    Anyway, let me come up for air. I don’t want to go much deeper on that, at least not without scuba gear, cause then we’ d have to deal with fate, pre-destiny, free will, and all of that philosophical shat. LOL

    How bout them ham hocks Cuz?

    No superstitions on my end but mom always made us go to church for a special new year’s eve service.

    Being from NY, I had my own tradition of staying up to watch the ball drop live on TV. I tried to go to Time Square once (back in my 20s) but it was mass chaos and freezing so we went back home. Never attempted it again!!! 😀

        1. I have to admit that we never did that. I honestly think my Mama got churched out when she was little girl so she ever really compelled us to go!
          That said, Eva was a God-fearing… praying woman. LOL!!!
          Could you share something about the tradition of “Watch Night?”

          The following is part of my TTT post, “A PROSPECT NEW YEAR”.

          “The Watch Night Services in Black communities that we celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as ‘Freedom’s Eve’. On that night, Blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law. Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free. When the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God.” For me, the history of “Watch Night” adds to its significance.

    OMG! Love this!
    My mother had the SAME rules and she was very adamant about them. If something went awry in the first few
    months of the new year, she would say, “you washed clothes, didn’t you?” or “you didn’t eat your greens did you?”
    She was SERIOUS about the rules.
    I’m getting all my sh*t done today. Not taking any chances that a stray ornament is out some where around the house.
