Not Lost on Us…

What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?

I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all
other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.

-Frederick Douglass

I used to love celebrating the 4th of July when I was a kid.

You know, ice cream, apple pie, friends, family, freedom and liberty, right?

Well, I’m sad to report that my joy for the holiday changed once I went to school and learned the irony surrounding it…

What with slavery and all.

Here’s the odd part, nobody I talked to really wanted to acknowledge this ginormous paradox.

Trust me, no teacher, not even the Black ones, pointed this enigma out to me; it was something I had to figure out on my own.

I remember asking my mom why we were celebrating freedom and independence for America when our ancestors were slaves at the time.

Mama just cut her eyes at me and said, “HUSH your mouth!”

Clearly, I wasn’t telling her anything new…

In fact, I was pretty much stating the obvious.

But, I guess she didn’t want to deal with the heaviness that inevitably encroaches on Black folks whenever they attempt to reconcile the holiday with the history.

So, in my family, we simply opted not to go there.

Don’t get me wrong, since everybody was off work, we went with “the flow” and attended reunions, cook-outs and the like– sans the flag waving gratitude of independence.

In short, we worked it, but it wasn’t lost on us.

And, based on the quote I cited above, it most certainly was NOT lost on our dear Frederick Douglass, who gave a fiery speech to the nation back in 1852.

The premise of this magnificent oration?

“What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”
(1852)

Chile, Frederick read America for filth!

IN 1852 no less!

Honestly, I can’t help wondering what he would think about our current state of affairs and the super slow “progress” we’ve made.

Especially considering the fact that he still held out hope for our country all those years ago.

All in all, Mr. Douglass believed that The Divine was and is in control.

So do I.

Now…

As you think about that, please enjoy a reading (excerpts) from this important work-performed by me, LadyG, and my dear cousin and fellow blogger, Ron Brown.

LadyG loves YOU!

I See YOU!

THANK YOU! Holler if you HEAR ME!

Lady G is doing a global Roll Call of THANKS TODAY!

Just scroll down after you read this:

I can’t fully express how touched I am to see the whole world–people of every race and ethnicity, standing with black folks in the U.S. as we seek justice for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and for the permanent dismantling of systemic racism in our society.

Flat out! We NEED your help to do it!

Please stay with us!

Y’all are SOLDIERS BABY!

If your country is actively involved in George Floyd protests, and I didn’t call you, please holler at me in comments; tell me what you all are doing over there!

I don’t want to miss anybody!

Either way, I’d love to hear from you in comments!

Lady G LOVES YOU ALL!

Superpower Challenge

screen-shot-2016-09-10-at-7-59-54-am

My friend Lisa A. over at Life of an El Paso Woman tagged me with the Superpower Challenge. Lisa is an awesome blogger!  Some of you have, no doubt, met her at a “My Jams” afterparty.  That said, she’s a regular around these parts and I enjoy bantering back and forth with her in comments.

If you haven’t had a chance to meet Lisa, you should!  Start by checking her out at Life of an El Paso Woman.  She’s always got something fun and interesting going on over there.

I love lurking around that joint.

Thanks for nominating me for this challenge Lisa!

The rules are as follows:

  • Name the creator of this tag . FarahEdz @ The Girl With Coffe
  • Use the Tag image above.
  • Thank your superhero  Nominator – Lisa A.
  • Which or what super power would you want and why?

Friends, for this challenge, I decided to really, really, really think about the superpower that I’d want to have most.  I mean I gave it some serious thought!

And so…

I finally settled on being about to teleport!

For those of you who love defining terms, here’s a definition:

Teleport: To transport or be transported across space and distance instantly. (From http://www.oxforddictionaries.com)

Anyway, I decided that if I am going to be transported across space and distance instantly, I’ll need some DEEP, DEEP, DEEP POCKETS!

Mucho Dinero!

Somebody, somewhere is saying, “Hey…wait Gwin, doesn’t LOVE make the world go ’round?”

Well in the words of my wise Aunt Bobbie Sue, “Love might make the world go ’round but money greases the wheel!”

🙂

So, to sum it up, I’d like to be able to have 10 tons of money and be able to appear anywhere-instantaneously !  By the way, I retain the right to be able to teleport anybody else along with me!

Yeah….that’s it!

I’m doing this my way!

Alright Gwin, how does that look?

It looks a little something like this:

I would visit family, friends and blogging buddies who live in different cities and we would:

  • Cook, talk, laugh and eat together
  • Go to our favorite restaurants (Are you seeing a pattern here? LOL!)
  • Have cocktails!  A must for me!

Since Mr. Rogers is my spirit guide, I would offer comfort and support where there is illness, injury, hurt, suffering or loss.

I would continue my love of learning by:

  • Going to libraries at major Universities all over the world
  • Attending events, lectures, talks, and conferences on the Arts and Sciences
  • Observing various artisans practice and hone their crafts (sculptors, luthiers/archetiers and other makers of beautiful musical instruments and wonderful things).
  • Learning to prepare gourmet meals from world renowned chefs and food artisans!  Food glorious food!
  • Sitting with and listening to spiritual teachers and practitioners of major world religions and magic 😉
  • Seeking advice and guidance from my elders
  • Teaching those who are interested in learning anything that I already know.  You can learn a great deal by teaching!
  • Going to museums worldwide
  • Talking to inventors, astronomers, nautical experts and keepers of information on space and time.

I would seek inspiration and delight by teleporting to

  • Musical festivals, concerts, and shows all over the world
  • A Mountain in Northern California
  • A sunset sailboat ride on a lake in Canada
  • A winding road lined with brown, gold and auburn autumn leaves in Vermont.
  • A crab festival on the East Coast
  • The Mediterranean Sea
  • A hiking trail near an Alpine village
  • An African Savanna
  • A South African beach
  • A picnic in New Orleans
  • A winery near The Eiffel Towel
  • A biergarten in Germany during Oktoberfest
  • A boat ride in the Carribbean
  • A Sunday dinner in Florence, Italy and shopping in Milan
  • High tea in an English home
  • A starry Spanish night
  • A soothing garden meditation
  • I could go on but I think I’d better quit now before I lose you!

Now that I think about it, maybe all I really need is some time, a whole bunch of money, friends on every continent, a chauffeur service and a freakin’ jet aeroplane!

By the way, thanks to blogging, I can happily report that I’ve met the aforementioned friendship goal 🙂

I’m still working on the others!  LOL!

Anyway…

Friends, why don’t you try this?  Create a post that tells us about your dream powers!

Maybe you can make some of them come true!

What a fun challenge Lisa!

Thanks!

Dragon’s Loyalty Award

Updated 5/22/2016 at 10:22am EST

First, let me say that I am so honored to have received so much blogger love! If I had known that my fellow bloggers were going to be this supportive, I would have started making contact with them minutes after I created this spot.  That’s real talk folks!

Now that I’ve said that, I’d like to thank Nazmin from Nas-tastic for nominating me for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award.  I love Nazmin’s blog and I have been following her from the start.  She’s a millennial so she always has something witty, insightful and fresh to talk about.  Be sure to check her out.  Thanks again Nazmin!

And so…

Best believe that there are rules and here they are:

1. Display the award on your blog.
2. Announce your win with a post and link back to the nominator.
3. Present 6 deserving bloggers with the award.
4. Link your awardees in the post.
5. Write 7 interesting things about you.

So, let’s go…

Seven interesting things about me

  1. I have a first degree black belt in Taekwondo; my son and I did this together.  Nope, I don’t still do it –so don’t even ask. But with that said, I can still do a jump front kick that will wreck your grill 🙂
  2. I have a B.S. degree in Political Science but I hate politics!  Here’s the thing, most people think that my degree indicates that I spent four years studying politicians and elections–WRONG.  Actually, I spent four years studying how the whole political process (nationally and internationally) really works.  There’s a helluva difference!  That’s why I know political bullshit when I hear it!
  3. I also have a M. Ed. in Health Education.  Most of my work experience lies here and in Health Information Technology.  That said, I got you!  I can coach you back to health and I can teach your provider how to use his or her brand spanking new Electronic Health Record System.
  4. I was Homecoming Queen in high school!  Stop laughing, I am not kidding you!
  5. I was in the first group of students at my high school to take Advanced Placement English.  I was the ONLY black kid in my class for the whole two years that we did it.  During that time we studied British/European and American Literature.  That’s why I have a penchant for saying things like, “My poor dog Sheppy shuffled off this mortal coil.”  For those of you who don’t do the Shakespeare thing that means he DIED!  ROTFLMAO.  By the way, George Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of my favorites–  the anthem “Beasts of England” kills me!  It just does!
  6. I am a Supersoul Sunday kinda girl so I love me some Marianne, Deepak, Eckhart and Liz Gilbert.  Guys, I am a seeker; that’s why I named the blog “Seek the best.”  I realize that people who don’t read the tagline may find the name off-putting; they think that I am implying that this is the best blog.  Nope, that’s not at all what I am saying.
  7. My brother (my whole sibling) had a DNA ancestry test done and our ethnic background is so varied that it is almost laughable.  Let’s just say that , like most black folks in America, I have ancestors all over Western Africa and Central/Northern Europe.  Bearing this in mind, my ‘bucket list’ includes visiting every country where I had an ancestor.  That means I’ll be going from Cameroon to Scandinavia!  How ’bout that!  Now please don’t ask me how I plan to do this; I am just going to put it out there into the Universe and see what happens!

Nominees?  Ok, here’s the tricky part!  I love a lot of bloggers but most of the bloggers that I follow are waaaaaaay more established than I am.  That said, they have tons of followers and have probably already received this award.  No matter, I am going to nominate these six guys anyway and see what happens!

Ron Brown

Tikeetha T

SD Gates

Chevvy’s Studio

T. Wayne

Lennon Carlyle

By the way, I forgot to list GeoGee of the GeoGee Experience.  Charge it to my head and not my heart!  G is in a class all by himself kids!  I am calling you out Geo because I’ve nominated you twice!  Do this one so that we can learn more about you!

Thanks again Nazmin!
